1. The public health concern I picked is vaccination, specifically vaccination accessibility.
2. There are many ways the a community can increase accessibility of vaccines, but first they have to convince people to get vaccinated in the first place. The first piece of infrastructure is community centers that have free or otherwise easily accessible classes on vaccines. These classes can be offered to anyone who doubts the safety of vaccines as a way of talking to people on a local level. The second piece of infrastructure is related to making it easy to access vaccines. A well organized website that has all the information people would want about vaccines in one place. This would include a list of all recommended vaccines, as well as when you should take them. It should also allow you to schedule vaccination appointments through the website. The third piece of infrastructure is the physical locations where people go to get the vaccinations. During the covid-19 pandemic, availability of the vaccine was low and appointments waiting times were long. When a large scale vaccination effort happens again, local governments should rent out large areas and hold quick vaccinations there. This would increase the capacity that people can get the vaccine if the permanent facilities become saturated.
3. These infrastructure changes would result in improved public safety for local communities. Getting vaccinated protects not only the person but also their community. Herd immunity is an important aspect of infections disease prevention. Immunocompromised people who can’t safely get vaccines will still be safe in their communities if everyone else gets vaccinated. These changes would encourage more vaccinations, improving public safety.
4. Some additional concerns are the anti-vax movement and their reactions to vaccine efforts. People in this group would fight against any community measures made, and combatting this group is difficult but necessary.
