1: In this case study, a Japanese teacher comes to work at a private school to find out that one of his previous students had committed suicide over the prior weekend. Many are distraught because they do not know why such a bright, quiet student would end their life. Everyone in the school is crying or sobbing for the seventh grade girl.
Before this case study, I did not know that suicide was so common in Japan and never really thought that it might be. Japan is known as a high income country with very intelligent citizens. I never thought to think about the mental factors that come with such high expectations. I learned through this case study that even the brightest students could be at risk for suicide.

Suicide is an extremely important issue in Japan. In Japan, many children and adults resort to suicide because of social pressures, parental pressures, school pressures and bullying. It is currently the leading cause of death in the country. Considering the leading cause of death is a preventable death, I find it to be extremely alarming. Through this case study I learned that in 2014 over 25,000 Japanese people took their own lives; 4,600 being teens or adolescents. Another 150,000 were injured from attempted suicide. These statistics are absolutely devastating.
When looking at social determinants of health and how they relate to suicide, social determinants are circumstances shaped by the distribution of money, power, and and resources at a global, national and local level. When looking at Japan and knowing that is it a high income country, it is surprising to find out that they have the highest suicide rates and it makes one question how cultural influences take a toll on the country. Studies have shown that attitudes toward suicide in Japan are far more accepting than those of people from the United States (Russell, 2017). In modern society, suicide is seen as a product of an irrational mind often because of depression. In Japan, suicide can be seen as an acceptable form of death and can even be seen as noble and a rational choice (Russell, 2017). Japan remains one of the highest among developed countries in suicide rates (World Health Organization, 2014). Another important determinant could be the 1998 economic recession which was associated with an increase in suicide mortality (Nakanishi, 2020). Poverty and stress can also be leading indicators of suicide. There is consistent evidence of an association between economic crises and increased suicide rates, especially in high income countries (Wasserman, 2020).
2:The story is about a Korean woman who found a job in a nail salon in Manhattan through ads in a local newspaper. On her first day of work, as she started talking to her coworkers, they warned her about the health hazards of the job, especially regarding birth defects, miscarriages, and cancer. While the conversation was going on, the coworkers found out that she was married and carrying a child. An older coworker who was listening to the conversation advised her to leave immediately. The woman herself noticed that the older worker was suffering from some breathing allergy, which she mentioned was because of working in the salon. She was handed with few newspapers and articles to go through, and while reading them, she noticed the hazardous chemicals that are being used in the salon. The young manicurist left the job after learning about the health risks associated with working in nail salons. The story emphasizes the need for better education and awareness of the dangers of working in nail salons, as well as the need for workplace safety measures.
The learning from the case is that working in nail salons can be hazardous to workers’ health due to the chemicals and fumes they are exposed to, and it is important for employees to be aware of the risks and for employers to provide adequate safety measures. Additionally, it is crucial for employees to do their own research and be informed about the potential hazards of their workplace. The story highlights the need for greater awareness, education, and advocacy for the health and safety of workers in the nail salon industry.
Topic Discussion :
The health disparity discussed in the commentary is primarily affecting Asian and Hispanic women working as manicurists in nail salons, who are exposed to hazardous chemicals in their workplace that can lead to serious health problems. This is a result of social determinants of health such as low wages and poor working conditions, which are disproportionately experienced by people of color. These factors can lead to limited access to healthcare, poor nutrition, and exposure to environmental toxins that can have long-term health consequences. As a result, people of color are at higher risk of developing health problems compared to the general population. This highlights the need for greater attention to social determinants of health and addressing the root causes of health disparities to improve the overall health and well-being of marginalized communities.
