Requirements: I don’t know
Lab Assignment #7
We are using the same simulation as last week:?PhET States of MatterLinks to an external site.
Select “Phase Changes” and expand the “Phase Diagram.”
Notice the red point on the phase diagram, that’s the plot of pressure and temperature currently.
The three main phases are labelled on the phase diagram. The unlabeled olive green section is the area where there is no noticeable difference between liquid and gas (called a supercritical fluid).
Move the lid of the container down about half way and pay attention to the pressure meter. Do?not?let the lid touch the solid block of neon.
Question 1:?How did the pressure change (if at all) while moving the lid down? Why did it change/ not change?
Apply some heat using the slider at the bottom of the screen, and watch the phase diagram.
Question 2:?How did the red dot move within the phase diagram? Is the dot in any particular section of the diagram, or is it on a line between two phases?
Continue applying heat until the temperature is in the range of 35-40K.?
Question 3:?How did the red dot move within the phase diagram? Is the dot in any particular section of the diagram, or is it on a line between two phases?
Question 4:?Notice the pressure meter, what is the pressure now?
Question 5:?Is the pressure meter consistent? If it it changing, what even inside the container is causing the pressure to change?
Gradually pull the lid back up to the top of the container, again watching the phase diagram.
Question 6:?How did the red dot move within the phase diagram? Is the dot in any particular section of the diagram, or is it on a line between two phases?
Cool the neon down using the slider at the bottom to 25K and let it sit for about a minute.?
Question 7:?Describe where the atoms are, what is the neon behaving like?
Question 8:?At this point it should be clear that it is difficult to leave the line between gas/solid and gas/liquid. The reason for this is that the temperature, pressure of the neon can change freely. If this were a real experiment in the real world, how could you force the container of neon to maintain constant temperature?
Slowly push the lid down as far as you can, watching the thermometer, pressure meter, and phase diagram.
Question 9:?What happened to the temperature? Why?
