PATIENT EDUCATION 1 Patient education Yakelin Llorente Miami Dade College Medical Campus NUR1025L Kathleen Muniz 03/26/2022
PATIENT EDUCATION 2 Patient education refers to the process of informing patients about their health conditions and equipping them with the knowledge and skills to make the right decisions regarding their health (Bastable, 2016). Patient education aims at making the patients and their families involved in health care which leads to better health outcomes and reduces health costs. Patient education includes important purposes such as promotion, prevention, restoration, and coping. Lifestyles have a significant effect on how long patients live and their quality of life. The patients and families, therefore, need and must obtain effective education to help them understand their health condition and the role they must play to ensure positive outcomes (Bastable, 2016). Patient education represents something different for each patient and the ability to learn and care. Cooperation depends on the various factor that is very important to take into consideration due to factors such as literacy levels, socioeconomic factors, cognitive development, physical abilities, and mental status. Before starting each patient’s education, the nurse needs to access and have the proper knowledge and proper education to provide the best information. The nurse should consider issues such as patients? educational needs, health needs, adaptability, cultural barriers to health or learning, and other resources to find the best way to educate and help them (Bastable, 2016). Patient description T.W is a 33-year-old male patient and weighs 95 kilograms. The patient was in good health until his accident. He was para surfing three days ago when he lost control and slammed into some rocks on the shore. He was brought to the Emergency Department via ambulance with a fractured leg. X-rays confirmed a fracture of the left femur. Two days ago, he was taken to the operating room (OR) for an open reduction internal fixation of his left femur., the patient is not married but lived with his girlfriend in a two-story single-family home. He is athletic and exercises five times
PATIENT EDUCATION 3 a week. Currently, he experiences acute pain in the left calf which he rates 9 out of 10. On performing a physical examination, the patient exhibits swelling on the left calf (edema) pedal pulse left 1+, pedal pulse right 2+, and limited left leg movement. He has compression devices bilateral and the surgical site at the left leg is dry and intact. Patient care One of the most important cares that T.W has been treated for is pain management care, he has been prescribed Hydrocodone 5 mg/acetaminophen 325 mg 1 tab PO every 4 hours mild prn for pain, Hydromorphone 1 mg IV every 4 hours prn for pain and Enoxaparin 40mg subcut daily anticoagulant. The patient has been monitored closely for the risk of (DVT). Deep Vein Thrombosis, if not treated promptly and effectively could be fetal. Nurses must inform and educate the patient about the risk that could follow surgery, and due to the lack of inactivity, we encourage the patient to ambulate at soon as they can. To avoid the risk of injury for T.W and the formation of blood clots, the nurse gives verbalizes an understanding of his condition and the therapy and precautions that he may be needed. The nurse must inform the patient and educates the patient about the side effects of the medication he has been prescribed, some pain medications can cause dizziness, therefore, is important for him to understand that he must seek assistance before getting out of bed or when ambulate. The nurse encourages the patient to keep elevation of the affected leg and use the graduate compression stockings too which reduce the caliber of the superficial vein, increasing the flow in the veins. The nurse teaches the patient the proper position and exercises such as active and passive leg exercises to increase venous flow. Ambulation is one of the most effective preventions for DVT, however, the nurse will teach and educate the patient to use the proper assistance devices to decrease joint loading, such as
PATIENT EDUCATION 4 crutches. Educating the patient on the use of crutches including properly positioning, the different types of gaits used for crutches, and how to go up and down stairs since the patient home is a two-story home. Analysis The care that the patient is receiving is in line with evidence-based practice on risk for DVT. Pain management is necessary, especially on the days the patient would participate in extensive physical activities. Avoid long periods of inactivity and don’t cross the legs. If patient must sit for a long time when flying, he must get up and walk around every hour or so. (Simons 2011, August) T.W also needs to take rests and avoids exerting himself unnecessarily. Too much rest or inactivity is not good as it causes stiffness and muscle weakness which is the opposite expected outcome. The nurse recommended to patient drink plenty of noncaffeinated, nonalcoholic fluids each day to avoid getting dehydrated.(Simons 2011,August) The measures T.W might take to reduce his risk of injury will help to keep him safe and lead a healthy life. The nurse explains the correct way to self-administer the prescribed medication, the right amount at the specific and right time that he must be followed discharge. The nurse should emphasize new adaptations that need to be done. The nurse suggests the patient engage in behaviors of lifestyle changes to increase the level of ease. The nurse should establish trust and make the patient feel cared for and therefore more receptive to health education. The patient should be encouraged to share information and concern as an individual, education should be adapted to the patient?s learning style, age, incorporating modern technologies available. The nurse will implement each training section using the teach-back technique to the patient
PATIENT EDUCATION 5 to ensure proper understanding and allow him to ask any question, the nurse shall give any clarification in detail. Summary In summary, the main complaint of the patient was pain, deficiency of movement. Therefore, patient education is crucial in the recovery process. Also, T.W has been under good care as effective treatment management practices such as pain management, reduction of the risk of injury and DVT have been taken. The patient?s family especially his girlfriend has been patiently and efficiently involved in his care with great understanding which crucial for a positive outcome in the recuperation. Reflection After going through T.W information, I have gained a deeper insight into the importance of patient education and the importance of communication which aligns with what I had learned in class. Also, this assignment and research help me greatly in integrating both pharmacological and evidence-based practice nursing diagnosis. I have especially learned the importance of accessing the patient information carefully before starting patient education to identify the key needs or priority areas as well as potential barriers to be aware of. In my future practice. It teaches me the importance to be alert to the latest techniques, and approaches and incorporating later recommendations and clinical expertise always keeping in mind patients? values and preferences. With this study I will always ensure to take time
PATIENT EDUCATION 6 to access all patients to implement the most effective patient education plan, keeping in mind that communication and understanding, and knowledge are key factors to gaining patient trust since patients are very sensitive and vulnerable positions. Through proper skill and rigorous education and training preparation, I can offer better care to my patients. References Bastable, S. B. (2016). Essentials of patient education.
