Introduction to the Problem
Depression is a mental health disorder that affects individuals of all ages. Nonetheless, evidence indicates teens have the highest chance of acquiring depression compared to other age groups (Mental Health America, 2023). Adolescent depression can have serious effects, including difficulties in school, social issues, and even suicidal thoughts. The issue is made worse because depression in teens is frequently misdiagnosed or left untreated, which results in further issues. Consequently, it is crucial for studies to understand the frequency and severity of depression among teenagers.
The importance of the problem/topic
Adolescents are particularly affected by depression, which is a serious global public health concern. Depression can impede adolescent development, which is critical for physical, social, and cognitive growth (World Health Organization, 2021). Adolescent depression can also result in substance abuse, suicide, and other mental health illnesses, among other undesirable results. So, it is essential to comprehend the frequency and severity of depression in teenagers to create efficient preventative and treatment plans.
Introduction of the independent and dependent variables
The research will focus on determining the relationship between age and prevalence and severity of depression with a focus on adolescents. Age is the independent variable in this study, whilst the prevalence and severity of depression in teenagers are the dependent variables. The correlation between these factors shows that depression in teens may become more common and severe as they age.
Statistics of the number of people or events affected by the problem
The World Health Organization estimates that 280 million people worldwide suffer from depression, with adolescents making up a sizable share of this population (World Health Organization, 2021). Almost 3 million young people between the ages of 12 and 17 in the US alone had gone through at least one significant depressive episode in the previous 12 months. Youth (aged 12 to 17) report having experienced at a minimum one episode of major depression in the previous year at a rate of 15.08% (Mental Health America, 2023). If ignored, depression and anxiety at this stage will likely last into adulthood.
Thesis Statement and Objective
This study aims to investigate the association between teenage depression prevalence and severity and age. The main objective is to determine the effect of age on the prevalence and severity of depression in teenagers.
