The Impact of Social Media on Public Health Awareness among Social Media Users in Saudi Arabia
Introduction
The recent COVID-19 epidemic has had a terrible impact on the entire world. The first case of COVID-19 in Saudi Arabia was discovered in March 2020, and it then started to spread quickly. As a result, the Saudi authorities implemented a variety of control measures on the transportation and education sectors which were listed among the sectors seen as risky in the virus’ quick spread. The entire population of Saudi Arabia was then put under a countrywide curfew to stop the virus’s spread.
Products made from natural sources have historically been thought of as the only cure for a number of ailments. Unprescribed natural products are frequently utilized to boost the immune system. A significant drawback of utilizing herbal items is the interaction between herbs and medications. On social media, medical misunderstandings on the efficacy of natural remedies like pepper, chili, black seeds, honey, onion, and garlic, etc. as preventive treatments were spreading at an alarming rate. There has also been misinformation about other dubious medical practices, such as eliminating the virus by gargling with salt water or using myrrh to stop it from entering the lung. Such false information can spread quickly and with devastating results.
Due to the rise in social media use during the pandemic, it is now possible to get information on COVID-19 there. In the early stages of COVID-19, have particularly emphasized the significance of social media as a practical tool for quick information dissemination. The Saudi Ministry of Health (MOH) has begun sharing awareness videos on social media sites including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to address the disinformation. The MOH has also started awareness campaigns to inform the public about the virus as well as the proper use of masks and hand washing, the significance of curfews, and how these precautions as well as social seclusion can help slow the rate of viral transmission.
Study Design and Population
An online descriptive cross-sectional study will be conducted anonymously among in Arabias general population.
Study Tool
An 11-item questionnaire will be created in order to measure the impact of the media on increasing public health awareness on the usage of natural treatments for COVID-19 infection. Four specialists in the fields of medical immunology, family medicine, preventive medicine, and clinical nutrition will each review the questionnaire’s format and contents in order to assess the questions’ appropriateness, relevance, clarity, and sufficiency. The questionnaire’s design will be in English and its Arabic translation. The four experts (native Arabic speakers) and 10 volunteers from the general public will pre-test the final Arabic questionnaire. On the basis on the responses, the final questionnaire will be changed.
Research questions
The proposed study will seek to answer the following question;
What role does social media play on the COVID-19 pandemic among the general population of Saudi Arabia
Whether Social media has played an essential role in the distribution of both accurate and misleading information during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Whether social media influenced the uptake of vaccines.
Abstract
Health educators and students have used social media to publicize health information, develop public health awareness strategies, and enlighten the public about health-related issues. This study seeks to establish the Impact of Social Media on Public Health Awareness among Social Media Users in Saudi Arabia. A cross-sectional study will be designed to assess the influence social media has on health awareness across the Saudi Arabian population. The questionnaire will be send to health care workers and students through WhatsApp groups. It is expected that more than 70% of social media users have found social media to be a useful tool in the dissemination of health related information.
Literature review
Social media sites are now ingrained in everyday life in the Saudi Arabia. The majority of Americans use social media and log on at least daily. 1 We need to learn more about the benefits and drawbacks of social media use for health as public health practitioners. These issues extend beyond safeguarding people’s privacy, which is the main goal of current regulatory initiatives. We must take into account the structure of our social media settings and discover ways to change them to be health-promoting, just as we have modified the built environment by requiring the inclusion of sidewalks to promote the walkability of new communities.
Social media use does seem to have a negative impact on wellbeing, on the one hand. For instance, a long-term study discovered that Facebook use was linked to deteriorations in self-reported physical and mental health. According to a different study, social media use raises the risk of anorexia by encouraging slim ideals and providing access to groups of people who engage in anorexic practices. 4 Social networking sites have been accused of aiding the opioid epidemic by making it easier to access illicit substances.
On the other side, there has been hope that the technology may provide fresh approaches to performing public health surveillance and disseminating information, particularly among people who are hard to reach (Al-Dmour, et al, 2020).
. In fact, the typical public health campaign nowadays contains elements of social media.
It has been discovered that using social media can help others with similar medical issues get social support. Additionally, social media channels seem to be a successful way to provide behavioral counseling for quitting smoking and other types of unhealthy behavior changes.
Although there are significant limitations, public health researchers can still examine social media and investigate strategies to use these platforms for the benefit of the public. Social media platforms are often private networks where users are exposed to content based on opaque and dynamic algorithms. We require the cooperation of social media firms in order to be truly effective. It is important to note that social media corporations are already aware of various issues related to public health. The majority of businesses have released their Terms of Use and Community Guidelines, many of which expressly forbid posting material that is objectionable to public health objectives, such as that related to the sale of illegal substances, child pornography, violent behavior, the encouragement of eating disorders, and hate speech.
With a few notable exceptions, a few social media platforms have sporadically worked with public health organizations and changed their search algorithms or content. However, there are currently no official processes in place for social media businesses to evaluate public health issues, collaborate with outside organizations for public health initiatives, or modify their websites to highlight public health content (Zarocostas, 2020).
With a few notable exceptions, a few social media platforms have sporadically worked with public health organizations and changed their search algorithms or content(Swan, 2009). Although few and far between, these instances of corporate and government cooperation are encouraging. However, there are currently no official processes in place for social media businesses to evaluate public health issues, collaborate with outside organizations for public health initiatives, or modify their websites to highlight public health content.
Statement of the problem
There is a dearth of research on how social media affects health awareness of COVID-19 medical disinformation in the Saudi Arabian region. Thus, the current study intends to close that knowledge gap by analyzing the impact of social media platforms on the population’s level of health awareness in terms of medical misinformation on the use of natural treatments to treat the COVID-19 illness. In addition, by assessing the most popular natural remedies that participants who watched the awareness videos ceased using according to their age, gender, and educational level, it was possible to report how the participants’ behavior had changed toward using them as preventative measures.
The Scope of the study
The proposed study will include the general public of Saudi Arabia. A representative sample of the population will be selected statistically to represent the population across all age sets in the country.
Significance of the study
The results of the study will be useful in advising stakeholders and the general public on then role social media plays in the health sector. Additionally, the findings will inform players on the positive use of social media in educating masses on health issues.
Objectives
General objective
To establish the impact of Social Media on Public Health Awareness among Social Media Users in Saudi Arabia.
Specific objectives
The study will seek to find out:
The role of social media on the COVID-19 pandemic among the general population of Saudi Arabia
Whether Social media has played an essential role in the distribution of both accurate and misleading information during the COVID-19 pandemic.
