It goes without saying that hospitals are always striving to improve their financial performance. While hospitals frequently say that they are experiencing financial difficulties, I feel that cost-cutting should not come at the price of nurses or patients. Our healthcare system places a strong emphasis on tertiary prevention rather than primary or secondary prevention. Primary prevention attempts to avoid the occurrence of an illness or injury, which may be accomplished through educating individuals on healthy and safe practices, as well as immunizations. Secondary prevention allows for early disease detection, and its target is healthy-appearing individuals with subclinical forms of the disease (Kisling & Dan, 2022). With our healthcare system, however, we frequently try to cure an issue after it has become unavoidable. Tertiary prevention attempts to lessen the severity of the illness when it is in its chronic state. As a nurse who works in the operating room, I often come across individuals who come in with chronic conditions where, if caught early, could have been prevented and treated at an acute stage. If hospitals and clinics increased their financial resources while keeping primary and secondary prevention in mind, they would be able to give access to screening services such as mammograms, testicular examinations, and even regular blood work. Expense reduction can make it more accessible for a patient to seek proper care, reducing the number of hospital resources required and minimizing their hospital stay.

A business solution that hospitals should look at is employee retention. Now more than ever, turn over rates are rising across the country, with nursing being one of the biggest groups of employees doing so. Retention of employees results in being able to avoid the heavy costs of onboarding new employees, creating a loyalty with current employees, and results in better patient care. The estimated cost of turn over for each nurse ranges between 22,000-64,000 (Jones, 2007). Hospitals can make changes to engage employees, raise wages, or provide bonuses to be able to keep these employees. Another cost incurred by hospitals now is having to pay travel employees sometimes up to four times what it costs to pay a staff employee. Another improvement hospitals can make is adequate nursing staff. This has a double benefit. It creates a better work environment for nurses which can promote retention and also results in better quality of care. Studies have shown that unsafe patient ratios and increased nurse work load can results in a higher mortality rate, nurse exhaustion, and eventually nurse burn out (Halm, 2019). A great way to present this to hospitals is that is they enforce safe patient ratios they allow nurses to use their skills to the best of their ability therefore creating the best outcomes.
