See Rock City Review
Assignment: You are to write review of See Rock City by Arlene Hutton. Your review should be
approximately three pages. It should evaluate the overall
quality of the production, specifically the playwriting, the acting, and the design. It should contain
ONLY A SMALL amount of summary. Your review should be organized around a strong thesis
statement. The thesis should let me know whether you think this production is worth seeing. As
you work, consult pages 82-83 in your textbook. In addition, I suggest organizing your paper
using the model below:
Paragraph 1: An introduction. This should include the thesis and some brief background
information on the production (i.e., where and when it was produced, who wrote the play, etc.)
Paragraph 2: A brief summary of the play’s story. This should be the only paragraph that doesn’t
have a qualitative judgment in it. It simply gives your readers an idea of what See Rock City is
about and who the main characters are. Remember a reviewer, which is what you are in this
instance, is writing to help consumers make a choice about what shows to see without revealing so
much information that it spoils the production for someone who hasn’t seen it yet.
Paragraph 3: The playwriting. Use this paragraph to evaluate the quality of Hutton’s writing,
specifically the plot, characters, and themes. Broadly speaking, you want to answer: What worked
well about this script? What, if anything, did not work well about this script? Some specific
questions worth considering: Was the compelling? Were the characters believable? Were the
characters unique individuals or just generic types? What are the play’s primary themes, and did it
say something important to today’s audience?
Paragraph 4: The actors. Which of the actors gave effective performances? Which did not? What
made these performances effective or ineffective? Get specific in your description of the actors’
work. The play has a cast of four, and you want to make sure you say something about all four
of the actors.
Paragraph 5: The design. Use this paragraph to describe and evaluate the design for your reader.
First, help them to see what you saw. The reader should be able to picture the set and costumes
from your description. Then explain whether or not these design choices were effective. You do
not need to cover every area of design, but you should cover at least 2 of the following areas: set,
costume, sound, and lights.
Paragraph 6: Conclusion. This should be a final recommendation to your reader to either see or not
see the production.
It does not matter whether I agree or disagree with your opinion of the production. You and I do
not have to like the same things. I simply care that you can justify your opinions. It is not enough
to say that something was good or bad. You must be able to explain why.
As you write, use the names of the artists involved. I have included a list of cast and production
team below for you to reference.
