Course Description
Applications of fluid mechanics principles to systems. Study of fluid statics and dynamics including Bernoulli equation, momentum, energy, laminar and turbulent flow, pipe and open channel flow, pumping systems, and dimensional similarity.
Course Prerequisites
ET 251 or permission of the instructor.
Credits: 3
Prerequisite-Corequisite Policy:
At the time or registration, it is the responsibility of the student to ensure that?either?all prerequisites have been met for the courses the student is registering for?or?all?prerequisites?are being?taken at the time of registration. ?If, at any time?after the registration or during the semester while attending the class, it is determined that a student does not have the necessary prerequisites for a class, the student will be dropped from that class. If a student is taking courses with co-requisites (courses that may be taken concurrently) the co-requisite requirements for each course must remain fulfilled at all times during the semester.?
Course Repeat Policy:?
No course may be repeated more than once without approval of the chair of the department offering the course. This policy applies to undergraduate students for courses repeated at CCSU beginning with the Fall 2003 semester.?
Learning Outcomes
The main objective in this class is to obtain a fundamental understanding of basic principles and applications of fluid mechanics, and to develop a systematic problem solving ability of a wide range of engineering problems. Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:
Distinguish fluids from solids and develop an ability to understand basic fluid properties such as density, viscosity, surface tension, etc.
Identify and analyze hydrostatics problems involving forces and moments on planar and curved surfaces, including concept of centroid, center of pressure, and buoyancy.
Develop competence with the conservation of mass, energy and momentum and its application in solving engineering problems.
Apply the principles of dimensional homogeneity to engineering analysis. Interpret fluid flow characteristics based on the fundamental non-dimensional parameters such as Reynolds and Froude?s numbers.
Carry out calculations involving energy loss in pipe flow, analyze, design, and evaluate pumping systems and pipeline components.
Design and conduct experiments, analyze and interpret data, and understand the significance of fluid mechanics measurement techniques, communicate effectively with written reports and engineering graphics.
Class Format
Class time is divided into lectures and lab experiments. The lectures and lab experiments are intended to complement each other.

Assessment Criteria
The final grade will be based on online and in-class quizzes, homework assignments, mid-term and final exams, laboratory reports, and in-class participation. The exams will include the departmental assessment test. Recommended homework problems will be assigned throughout the semester. The examination questions will be similar in style and closely related to the homework, in class sample problems, and quizzes. It is in your advantage to try mastering the questions without assistance.
Laboratory Reports
During the current semester, laboratory experiments will be performed, which exemplify topics covered during lectures. Each student will be responsible to attend the experiments, take notes, and write a report for each of the experiments.
Online Quizzes
Online quizzes will be made available on Blackboard. The specific topics and due dates will be provided by the instructor.
In-class Quizzes
Occasionally there will be a15-20 minutes quiz that will cover important topic(s), examples, and practice exercises that have been studied in earlier classes.
Exams
Exams are comprehensive, which means that they cover all the theoretical and practical components of the lectures. The specific dates of the exams will be announced in class and will be approximately around the middle of the semester and at the end of the semester.

The testing instruments are designed to test various levels of your grasp of the material. As you are pushed towards excellence, invariably, there will be some tests that are challenging and possibly low-scoring. However, at no point will you be assigned questions that require knowledge of material that is not covered in class (we will often lean on physics and mathematics that is consistent with 300/400 level course). In some cases, you may be able to get bonus points on. You are encouraged to attempt the bonus questions as it is good way to improve your grade. Please note that the final grades will be assigned based on a curve that will reflect the table below.
