write a 650-word essay that addresses how two separate historical events were treated in the media. That means, in short, this is a media analysis with a specific eye for how reporting has changed over time.
Objectives:
To choose two media events at least 20 years apart and report on how the unfolding of the first event compares/might compare with a more modern event OR a proposed event. (There’s more explication on this below.)
To display 1.) a preliminary knowledge of media and media lexicon by writing a paper that also displays 2.) a command of academic English, and 3.) an ability to research historical media events. That means you’ll need to compare these two events using some of the language that’s already been used — both in the Turow text and my lectures — to augment your assessment of two media reporting events.
Duties:
Item #1: Between now and Thursday (March 2), you are to explain in a paragraph the historical media event that you’d like to research/describe, and then a possible modern analogue. You should paste this text in as part of the “prelim historical media event” assignment that’s now open on Canvas.
Item #2: After I’ve commented on your choice (I might ask you to refine or mildly alter your aims, but unless your choice is grossly negligent, I won’t ask you to alter the topic), you should write a paper of 650 words or more. This also should be submitted to Canvas under the “Essay #1” heading.

Orson Welles’ early 1930s “War of the Worlds” broadcast compared to reportage of some modern scare, whether it’s a hoax or not.

Of-the-moment media reporting of JFK’s assassination, compared to the attempt on Reagan’s life, or perhaps your well-grounded supposition of modern media reportage following a potential presidential assassination.
Coverage of Jayne Mansfield’s intentional wardrobe malfunction at Sofia Loren’s 1957 Hollywood party, vs. any modern-day wardrobe malfunction, intentional or otherwise.
Coverage of Haile Selassie’s death vs. Hosni Mumbarak’s death.
