This section focuses on the history of the music and culture you are studying. In this section be sure to include the names of individuals or groups who are important to the development of the music. Avoid just listing these VIPs – if you mention someone, tell the reader why the person or group is important to the music. Most of the music studied has at least one musician or band that is considered to be the initial creator of a particular tradition, therefore, it is important that you inform the reader in this section. A timeline of events may be helpful in organizing this section.
If your topic will be focusing on a specific musician or band as an icon, it is fine to have a detailed discussion in the “Ethnomusicological Analysis” section of the paper but do mention the person or band here and write that you intend to go into more details in your analysis section (e.g., “Doc Watson is an important Anglo American musician and will be discussed later in the analysis section of the paper”).
