My research study is in the field of telemedicine and will examine the implementation science of integrating this technology into a healthcare organization sufficiently to ensure its sustainability and effectiveness.
Telemedicine, or telehealth, is a method of delivering medical services remotely. Its use expanded rapidly during the Covid-19 pandemic of 2020 (Pang et al., 2022). The Covid pandemic caused many healthcare providers to begin offering a broad scope of telemedicine out of necessity for the first time due to the severe reduction in face-to-face appointments and the desire to decrease virus transmission (Aashima et al., 2021).
During the first two decades of the 21st century, researchers conducted many studies to measure the providers and patients acceptance of telemedicine as a viable mode of rendering medical care (Cole-Reed, 2019). The advent of the Covid-19 pandemic stimulated many more studies (Aashima et al., 2021). Results from these studies were generally positive, but several also noted opportunities for further research. These opportunities focused on technology, training, data privacy, and legal guidelines (Aashima et al., 2021).
The expanded use of telemedicine during the pandemic revealed the strengths and limitations of this technology as it existed at the time of the pandemic (Pang et al., 2022). The strengths included improved access to timely medical care for patients with limited access to physicians due to transportation, time constraints, and geographic separation. The limitations included physicians’ reluctance to adopt the new technology, inconsistent training, weak telecommunications infrastructure, lack of integration with the current workflow utilizing the electronic medical record, and poor internet infrastructure in rural areas.
As communities move beyond the Covid-19 pandemic, interest in telemedicine by physicians appears to be declining somewhat (RockHealth, 2021). Yet, telemedicine has excellent potential to expand access to medical services for vulnerable populations, reduce costs for patients, and address the growing shortage of physicians. Healthcare administrators and policymakers must understand the best ways to integrate telemedicine into the normal mode of delivering medical care when appropriate (Muhammad et al., 2021; Muhandiramge & Matthiesson (2021).
Studies of physician acceptance of telemedicine technology show that further research will strengthen the training of all members of the healthcare team, tailor the technology to practical, integrated solutions, and develop provider-driven sustainable solutions (Andrews et al., 2017; Mooi et al., 2012; Zhu et al., 2020). A focused study of providers, clinical support staff, and administrators perceptions of telehealth technology and its usefulness for the future, beyond the pandemic, is needed.

Topic Overview
My research study is an exploratory qualitative case study of agritourism operators in Mississippi. More specifically, the study investigates the perspectives of venue operators in regard to agritourism diversification and digital marketing strategies. The dissertation utilizes three frameworks, including a framework for agritourism introduced by Chase et al. (2018), the technology acceptance model by Davis (1989), and the resource-based view of the firm by Wernerfelt (1984).
Agritourism is a diversification strategy employed by farmers to generate additional revenue streams for their businesses. According to the Chase et al. (2018) framework, agritourism includes u-picks activities such as visiting a farm to pick blueberries or to acquire a Christmas tree. Other ventures include festivals or weddings on farms, overnight stays, educational tours, and even farmers’ markets located off of the working farm.
Synopsis of Problem
Agritourism supports the viability of family farms and provides additional streams of income to more impoverished rural areas. According to the latest Census of Agriculture provided by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), the agritourism industry in Mississippi is growing at a much slower pace than most of the United States. This study hopes to gain helpful insights into the diversification and digital marketing strategies of agritourism venues in Mississippi. These insights (when provided to agritourism operators) may assist in the revising of agritourism marketing strategies and, thus, lead to higher revenues.
