Susan completes registration for her first term of school. She?s finally going to go back and get the degree she started when she was eighteen. She goes back to her job search and eyes the salaries for people with their graduate degree. Maybe if she gets her first degree, she could go on for a Masters. Dissatisfied with her options, she shifts to figuring out a plan to help her son. How much would a boarding school cost?
Susan stares at the final cost per year. All this time, she?d thought that the price mentioned on the Web site was for an entire year, and that getting Joe into a controlled environment would help him. But Juan had a point about the cost.
She knows she has to be the one to make this decision but thinks that she needs to hear all sides. If she and her mother can agree on a plan, then she will have emotional and financial support for it. She won?t have to keep fighting.
But how can she convince her mom? Her mom always assumes that Susan was at fault. That isn?t an easy obstacle to overcome.

Learner 1——I honestly feel that Susan is not ready to pursue graduate school. She has too much going on in my opinion. Graduate school requires a lot of time and attention. Susan has a lot going on with her sons behavior issues and financially she is struggling to make ends meet. She has been unable to find a job and she has not been able to gain control of her son. Graduate school is not entirely a bad idea because she can help build her career by maintaining a higher degree and expanding her knowledge and possibly getting a better job opportunity with more educational background. The only issue is that her son needs her time and attention and at this time it?s not a good time to pursue a task that is more demanding. Susan needs to focus on finding a job that can help her financially because her son may need special support that she would have to be able to pay for
LEARNER 2–After reading this weeks resources, i’d like to address Susans case. I’ve known several individuals who don’t have great relationships with their parents. I can’t relate to that, however, I empathize with such situations. I’m aware it can be quite stressful and devastating at times. Some find ways around it and others dont.
Despite the variability between Susan and her mother, she should put her pride aside and initiate a mature conversation with her mother. The conversation should consist of Susan expressing to her mother about how she feels, her career plan goals and what’s her decision for the sake of Joe with purity. Susan should start the conversation off with how much she loves her mother, Joe and kindly ask her mother to allow her to have the mic for a few minutes. Susan needs to be very thorough in her conversation and assure her mother that her motivation is stemming from the love that she has for Joe. Also, Susan should ask her mother for a little bit more support, not for her personally, but for the sake of Joe, her grandson. Next, she needs to demystify her career plans to her mother which will allow her mother to feel confident enough to provide the assistance that’s needed. Lastly, allow her mother to express her point of view, whether it’s negative or not. Susan should give undivided attention and end the conversation with a word of honor. Nonetheless, communication is key to a decent relationship between Susan and her mother.
Needless to say, I am proud of Susan for considering going back to school. Education is ?one? of the keys to success in this lifetime. I hope Susan takes time to evaluate and choose the right major. Not for the income alone but for her passion and lifetime benefits.
