Solange and Peter Huynh are the business owners of Phnom Penh, a Cambodian-Vietnamese Restaurant located in Vancouver. They have recently began recovering profits from the uptake of customers after pandemic restrictions began to be lifted. In line with this, the owners have been thinking about expanding their restaurant to Surrey given a recent market scan they commissioned indicating that customer reception within the area is high and there is a potential niche in the market. Being family business owners, their current restaurant in Vancouver is mostly manned by relatives and friends. However, they have determined that they would be unable to rely on this recruitment method with their expansion. In addition, while they are familiar with business and operating requirements, they have not yet seriously considered policies and procedures involving management of people/ employees especially across multiple locations.
They have recently reached out to you, as an independent, free-lance HR/OD/OCM consultant to assist them in assessing their family business’ people readiness when expanding to Surrey. In particular, they are asking for help in terms of ensuring that the quality of the food and ambience that they have been known for in Vancouver is maintained in their new location. They would expect from you a detailed environment scan (PESTEL needs to be fully filled), a root cause based on their ‘people management needs’ (this needs to be scoped further) and a logically-linked knowledge object recommending a course of action.
