Sickle cell disease is a hereditary disease passed from both parents that carry the genetic trait to the child. This disease is where the red blood cells are not properly formed. The red blood cells become hard and sticky and are shaped like a C shaped farm tool called a sickle. Unfortunately, this causes the red blood cells to die early and this causes a continual shortage of red blood cells. This can lead to blockages, pain, swelling, infections and delayed growth or puberty. Sickle cell disease cannot be cured, however with a early diagnosis (usually at birth) there are medications that can be taken, more serious cases may need a blood transfusion or a bone marrow transplant. I have worked with patients with this debilitating disease and it typically gets worse over time, as they age. Over half the patients with Sickle cell disease have suffered severe damage to at least 1 organ, and other complications can include bone deterioration, vision loss and chronic pain. There is a difference between sickle cell disease and sickle cell trait, when a medical record contains both terms “sickle cell disease” and “sickle cell trait” only code for the sickle cell disease assigned. My code for sickle cell disease without crisis would be: D57.1
Primary Parkinson’s Disease
Parkinson’s disease is a progressive disorder of the nervous system that affects middle aged adults. It is the degeneration of the basal ganglia and a deficiency of the neurotransmitter dopamine. This disease affects movements and most associate this disease with it’s usual sign of giving patients the tremors and slow movements. The exact cause of the disease is unknown, but mostly it is due to the loss of nerve cells in the brain, and affects the nerves in the rest of the body. People who develop Parkinson’s mostly develop this disease from genetic predispositions and heredity or exposure to environmental toxins. frontline treatment of Parkinson’s is usually medications that increase dopamine and anti-tremor medications. Other than those patients are advised to maintain exercise to help with physical motor movements and control, and eat a healthy balanced diet. The code I would assign for Parkinson’s Disease would be: G20
