Neutropenia is a blood disorder that occurs when a person has low levels of white blood cells known as neutrophils. Neutrophils, which are produced in bone marrow, are the first line of defense in helping the body fight infection. Low levels of white blood cells occurring on a test is not indicative of a neutropenia diagnosis as levels can fluctuate. If multiple tests show abnormal levels over time or if there are repeated infections, it may be the result of neutropenia. Classification from mild to severe ranges from 1500 to less than 500 neutrophils per microliter of blood. The disorder can be the result of medication, infection, cancer, genetics, autoimmune disorders, and nutritional deficiencies. There aren’t any symptoms associated with neutropenia; however, the resultant infections may result in symptoms. Treatment may include the following: dietary restrictions, corticosteroids, antibiotics, granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, and stem cell transplant. The code for Neutropenia, unspecified is D70.9.
Sensorineural hearing loss is a type of loss that generally develops progressively and effects the inner ear and structures in the inner ear. There are tiny hairs located within the ear that convert vibrations into signals that are carried to the brain and processed as sound. There are several factors that can lead to damage including: heredity, aging, injury and prolonged exposure to loud noise in excess of 85 decibels. The amount of time needed to cause permanent hearing loss decreases as the loudness increases. For prevention of hearing loss the safe noise level, according to EPA standards, is 70 decibels. Common symptoms of loss include: turning up the volume on tv, trouble hearing with background noise, ringing in the ear and voices seeming muffled. Diagnosis can be accomplished by physical examination, tests involving tuning forks and an audiometer test for more specific diagnosis. Treatment is commonly accomplished through the use of hearing aids or implants. The code for Sensorineural hearing loss, bilateral is H90.3.
