I can honestly say without a doubt that there are many differences and similarities amongst managers and leaders. There are many reasons why they are called a leader and a manager. A leader is one who is more people oriented and who is not afraid to take on the big tasks. A manager is my opinion who is someone who does most things behind the scenes and helps when they are needed. I do have a lot of respect for both.

The theory that leadership and management are different is offered as a truth where the two are suggested as unique predictors of decision-making behavior. The truth of the relationship between leadership and management is difficult to ascertain because of the realities of practical application. The higher education environment is not conducive to hiring individuals who only manage or lead, as historically defined. Those assuming administrative positions within our academy must encompass abilities, skills, and attitudes attributed to both leading and managing. For example, all decanal deans have individuals who are direct reports. These deans have authority and responsibility for the activities and productivity of those individuals. Hiring individuals specifically to manage or lead would be cost prohibitive and impractical. Recruiting individuals with only management responsibilities is inefficient and would negatively impact an institution’s ability to grow and improve. Managing is essential, and developing management – related skills is the first step toward developing leadership-related skills (Azad, N., Anderson, H. G., Brooks, A. D., Garza, O. W., O’Neil, C. E., Stutz, M. M., & Sobotka, J. (2017, August 1).
Being a leader is important especially in healthcare. Being a leader shows the integrity, honesty and the work ethic it took to get them to this position. I have always been taught you should always reach for the top. Getting my Bachelors degree was something I thought would open so many doors for me. You are told if you get this degree, it will take you straight to the top. You will become the leader or the manager or a big company or corporation. Ever since the day I graduated college, I have always started at the bottom. Although, in the end, I have learned you just don’t start at the top. You always end up at the bottom. In my profession now, I know and understand I will not make it to the top. I will not make it where I would want to go due to the military moving around so much and unable to keep that position.
Leaders are pioneers willing to step out into the unknown. However, leaders aren’t the only creators or originators of new products, services, or processes. Innovation comes more from listening than from telling, and from constantly looking outside of yourself and your organization for new and innovative products, processes, and services. You need to search for opportunities by seizing the initiative and by looking outward for innovative ways to improve (Kouzes, J. M., & Posner, B. Z. (2017).
Leadership is something you experience in an interaction with another human being. That experience varies from leader to leader, from constituent to constituent, and from day to day. No two leaders are exactly alike, no two constituent groups are exactly alike, and no days in the life of leaders and constituents are exactly alike. Great leadership potential is discovered, and unlocked, when you seek to understand the desires and expectations of your constituents, and when you act on them in ways that are congruent with their norms and image of what an exemplary leader is and does (Kouzes, J. M., & Posner, B. Z. (2017).
I would rather for a leader due to the fact that a leader is someone who is willing to get their hands dirty. They are willing to help on a moments notice and will be there whenever have questions that go unanswered. In my recent job experiences, I have experienced every type of manager and a “leader.” In every job I have had, I don’t feel there was one person I could go to for those questions I was unsure about. I want to work for someone who know the job inside and out.
