2AbstractEffective management of diabetes is a complex issue, with patient compliance in controlling blood glucose levels playing a significant role in increasing the risk of complications, leading to increased healthcare costs and time expended by the healthcare system to treat these patients. Despite the progress that has been made in educating patients regarding the risk of complications of poorly controlled diabetes and the development of self-monitoring technology, adherence to blood glucose monitoring still remains a challenge. Continuous blood glucose monitoring has been introduced as a potential solution to improve diabetic management and therefore, patient outcomes. This evidence reviews whether continuous blood glucose monitoring results in greater patient compliance for diabetes management compared to self-monitoring of glucose levels. This review analyzes two primary research studies that found continuous blood glucose monitors lead to greater patient satisfaction and compliance and shown to be accurate in reading blood glucose levels. However, further research is needed to fully understand the potential benefits and disadvantages of continuous blood glucose monitoring systems for type 2 diabetes patients. 3Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: Continuous Monitoring versus Self-monitoring of Blood GlucoseIn the United States, approximately 9.3% of the population has diabetes mellitus (Ostling et al., 2017). Due to the high occurrence of diabetes in the population, it makes for a common comorbidity among hospitalized patients. The thirty-day readmission rates for these patients is estimated to be between 14.4 and 22.7% which is much higher than the standard rate for all hospitalized patients (Ostling et al., 2017). Diabetes is costly disease for both patients and the healthcare system, and poor compliance with blood glucose monitoring can increase the risk of complications for the patient and increase healthcare costs. Improved compliance with blood glucose monitoring can lead to better diabetic management, which in turn, can result in better patient outcomes and reduced strain on healthcare resources. Diabetic management has continued to improve over the years with the adoption of more user-friendly self-monitoring technology and more education of the complications that can arise with uncontrolled blood sugar. However, the drawbacks to self-monitoring blood glucose levels should be noted, as it requires a patient to be vigilant and compliant with using a finger-stick method of checking blood sugar levels consistently throughout the day. This has led to the development of continuous blood glucose monitors. Continuous blood glucose monitoring has become increasingly popular for diabetic management, and offers the advantage of real-time blood glucose monitoring. This allows for more individualized and consistent diabetes management. Therefore, the findings of two published research studies indicate that continuous blood glucose monitoring may be a better option than self-monitoring blood glucose for increasing compliance in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients.
4I started off my introduction presenting statistical information regarding the significance, prevalence and impact that poorly controlled diabetes can have, not only on the patient but also on the healthcare system as a whole. Therefore, this underscores the importance of my thesis, that poorly controlled diabetes has a significant impact on the healthcare system and given the high prevalence of diabetes, finding a potential solution to increase patient compliance is crucial. Next, I went into what has been implemented already to address the challenge of diabetic management, such as technological advancements in self-monitoring systems and diabetic education. I emphasized that these two methods would not suffice in tackling the compliance issue of blood glucose monitoring because they require the patient to be vigilant and consistent with monitoring. Then, I proposed the potential solution of continuous blood glucose monitoring and why I believe that it would be beneficial to patients. To differentiate my thesis from the introduction I used the transition, Therefore?. My thesis is significant because diabetic management is a multifaceted challenge that requires evidence-based research in educating patients on management and prevention of diabetes. As healthcare professionals, it is our responsibility to propose an evidence-based tool to patients that can improve long-term diabetes management. In summary, I attempted to highlight the significance of my thesis in the introduction by emphasizing the importance of diabetic management for our patients and healthcare system and the need for a potential solution that could increase compliance with blood glucose monitoring.
