Dominik, 21, is currently residing in a Quest apartment awaiting suitable Supported Independent Living through NDIS funding. Dominik is supported by Disability support workers providing at present, a 24 hour service to ensure his needs are met and to assist Dominik with his goal of greater independence and to live in the community and enjoy developing friendships with those of similar ages. Dominik has a diagnosis of Cerebral palsy and has a mild intellectual disability, he is a wheelchair user and has complex medical needs. Dominik was placed into foster care at the age of 5. Since his adolescent years there was a number of complexities and concerns raised in relation to Dominik’s relationship with his foster parents. Reports were submitted by support staff and Dominik’s support coordinator highlighting concerns regarding misappropriation of Dominik’s funds and controlling and coercive behaviour of Dominik’s foster parents. Dominik on a number of occasions was found to be physically distressed and fearful of what information was shared with his foster carers when he in the company of support staff during community access. Advice was sought from the NDIS Quality Safeguards Commission and an Advocacy Service was engaged to support Dominik with exploring options available to him including seeking alternative housing.
Dominik has been experiencing significant anxiety since moving out of his foster carers home. While Dominik expresses that he is relieved to have left home he also feels that he does not have a support network outside his current support team and is feeling overwhelmed about what need to occur to establish himself living independently in the community.
Dominik finds it difficult at times to communicate and relies on using digital technology to express himself. Dominik can be shy and has experienced most of his life having others speak on his behalf.
