In the United States, black girls who are young are more likely to be obese. Obesity is the most common long-term illness that affects children and teens. Since many families have more than one obese member, it’s likely that genes play a role in the disease. This is especially true when we look at how common obesity is in different races (Johnson et al., 2021). More specifically, studies have shown that black girls are the most likely to be overweight as children. This is true for children of all races (Winkler et al., 2017). From the two articles I read, it seems clear that there haven’t been many studies done to learn more about this issue, especially when it comes to racial minorities and the things that might make black girls more likely to be overweight.

Being homeless is a very big problem. The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) found that about 600,000 people in the United States were homeless in 2022. Since 2020, the number of homeless people in America has gone up by more than 200,000, and the COVID pandemic is a big reason why. Security.org says, “One of the most worrying trends is the growing number of people who are homeless for long periods of time.” This includes people who have been homeless for more than a year or who have been homeless for long stretches in the last three years (Security.org, 2023). Homelessness is a problem in neighborhoods that are mostly made up of people of color and people with lower incomes. People of color are most affected by homelessness, especially Black people, since 40% of homeless people are Black (Security.org, 2023). Because of racial differences in these communities, more than half of the people who are homeless are people of color. In 2019, there were 300,000 homeless people, and 52.4% of them were people of color. In Fowle’s article, “Racialized Homelessness,” he talks about how race plays a role in the social connections between homelessness and race. Racialization happens when social problems are given a meaning based on a person’s race (Fowle, 2022). In this case, homelessness is the social issue, and it is tied to race because most people who are homeless are people of color. Homelessness means that people and families don’t have a place to live. It also has a number of other effects, such as poor physical health, mental distress, early death, long-term mental illness, and drug and alcohol abuse. There are economic inequalities and social systems that keep a racial hierarchy that affect homelessness. This makes it hard to make real progress in reducing homelessness (Fowle, 2022).
