Juanita Christiana
Juanita is 50 years old.
She has been a resident at Healthy Lives for several months now. Her decision to move into residential care came after having a stroke. She has become partly paralysed and most of the time has balance issues, which can leave her at risk of falls. Her short-term memory is not always good and she has had a few situations where forgetting to do something or forgetting that she has done something) has put her a risk of harm.
Juanita found she was lacking confidence and was not always able to do the things she wanted to do (she had to give up driving). Living alone became too much for her and she struggled to get to her rehab appointments.
Juanita worked as a nurse in a small country hospital for many years, and then continued the rest of her working years as a nurse in a mental health care facility. Juanita was an active volunteer in her local community for over 20 years, assisting with many community-based projects. Mental health was her main cause
She has two children. Her son, Julian, lives in another state and is estranged from the family. Her daughter, Johanna, visits Juanita three times a week. Johanna has a seven-year-old son who visits with Juanita weekly. Johanna is a single mother.
Julian is aware that his mother is at Healthy Lives but Juanita’s file states that no information is to be disclosed to him. Juanita will determine whether she wishes to communicate with her son. Should she become incapable of making such decisions in the future, Johanna will do so as the ‘person responsible’.
Juanita’s husband died 17 years ago from ALS. Juanita cared for him as much as she could until his condition required that he be admitted into care.
Juanita is sociable and very friendly. She loves a chat and the staff always find her easy going and a joy to care for. The only time that they have issues with Juanita is when she is tired and doesn’t feel like getting up and about and exercising. She often tries to dress herself and do personal support tasks alone, but generally a staff member needs to come in and assist her. She has a number of activities she has to do to help recover from the paralysis so that she can be more independent in future.
Juanita is Catholic and likes to attend church every week with Johanna and her grandson. Juanita has many friends from church. Johanna has expressed concern that she may not be able to keep taking Juanite to church as her son is starting to participate in sporting activities on the weekends. She understands that her mother will be very upset if she cannot go to church, but she must also look after her son’s interests as
well.
Johanna has mentioned that before her stroke, Juanita enjoyed puzzles such as jigsaws and crosswords She was always doing the crossword puzzles and the nine-letter-word/target puzzles in the newspapers She has noticed that her mother has not mentioned these puzzles since the stroke and staff has not seen her take any interest in puzzles either, especially as the recreation room in the facility has many puzzle books and jigsaws readily accessible to clients
