When the discussion of pruning came up, I started to think back on what I have forgotten over the years. The biggest thing I can think of is playing an instrument. In middle school and high school, I was big into band, and I played the trombone. When I was a senior in high school, I was the field commander of my marching band. If you put music Infront of me today, I don't think I could read it anymore. It's been 8+ years since I last played trombone. It's amazing to think I was once able to do all that but have forgotten about it now. I guess because I wasn't doing it every day anymore, my brain just got rid of it. I wonder if I could learn it quicker though if I picked it back up.
-Do you ever drive and just do things without even thinking about it? Yes, sometimes I will drive home after work, and then when I get home, I don't even remember the drive home. It's honestly kind of scarry, but I am glad to hear other people do it too.
-Are they still putting resources in sports and music? Yes, they are here in my area, but they are not distributing the money evenly in my opinion. For example, when I was in school, we had to have Eagle Scouts repaint our marching field and rebuild our band tower. We also had to pay for our own uniforms, so our band had the same ones from the 1990s. In that same year we had the boy scouts help us with things we needed, the football team was given a million dollars to get a jumbotron that was not really needed. Just something nice to have. It was a big issue in the school and community. After that, we started to get more money.
-I can relate to Cynthia when she said where she grew up, they used sports and music as a reward. In this area, if you get below a certain grade, you are not allowed to be involved in any extra school activities. I would say it's very much used as a reward here.
-When I was in school, we did learn how to use an analog clock, but I worked with someone who was 5 years younger than me that had no idea how to read the clock. I had to help her when we had to document times at work. Even though analog clocks may be a thing of the past, I feel like kids still need to learn how to use them just in case they work in an older building without digital clocks like I do. I wouldn't want my kids to be embarrassed because they have to ask their co-worker for the time.
