Much of what we know of early Chinese history was the life’s work of Sima Qian. He accumulated and recorded as much early history as he could, and when he was ordered to stop and destroy that history, he refused. His punishment was to be castrated. With that, he was allowed to continue to record historical information. Others like Martin Luther risked his life to promote his new idea of Christianity as separate from Catholicism. The church sought to put him on trial for heresy and destroy him. Socrates in Ancient Greece opted for death by swallowing poison rather than abandon teaching after his trial for “corrupting the minds of the Athenian youth.”
These people are incredible models of those who put themselves in grave danger or accepted death in order to continue to spread information. What person, people, or groups have you heard about in our lifetimes who have done similarly? Is risking one’s life to disseminate information foolish – or heroic?
