Perhaps the most dangerous human woman mentioned in The Odyssey is Clytemnestra, who conspired with her lover to murder her husband, King Agamemnon, the leader of the Greek campaign to Troy. Speaking of Clytemnestra’s betrayal, Odysseus exclaims, “Curse her! Zeus has always brought / disaster to the house of Atreus [the Greeks] / through women” (11, 436-438). Clearly, The Odyssey revolves around male heroism, and late-bronze-age Greece is a starkly patriarchal culture. But do you find The Odyssey to be a misogynistic poem?
