Prospectus:
Another important tool for researchers (particularly for explaining their research to prospective readers or funding bodies) is the prospectus: a kind of road-map for the research project that explains where you think you’re going, how you think you’ll get there, and what you think you’ll find. As the highlighted verbs indicate, this can be a tricky document, operating as it does in the realm of the speculative. The point is to show your reader that 1) this is an interesting and worthwhile project, and 2) that you’re equipped to pursue it. As with the annotated bibliography, it’s fine to deviate from this document once you start writing – the point is to streamline the writing process, and to give yourself at least an initial path to follow.
The prospectus should be between 250 and 500 words.
The focus should be on your general argument and how it will unfold – don’t get too bogged down in the specific analyses or points that you plan to make.
Essential points to cover include: the broad topic, the question you intend to ask of it, and the stakes of the argument, i.e. why should your reader care?
It’s fine to speak in the future tense – phrases like “I anticipate” or “I plan” will be helpful.
Presentation
Speaking is an essential part of this class, and of academic discourse in general. Academics often present their work at talks and conferences. While they may present a finished product or idea, it is more common to present projects-in-the-making, or ideas that are not fully polished or watertight. The act of presenting ideas orally can help to clarify them for the researcher in question, and the feedback of peers is essential in foregrounding potential objections, counter-arguments, dead ends – and generally in fine-tuning an argument.
You will present your project to the class, taking care to express your idea simply & clearly, so that non-specialists can still follow
Be confident, but don’t be afraid to express the areas that you’re less sure of, and where feedback would be especially helpful.
