Choose a social movement activist or leader as the focus of your assignment. In Learning Module 2 you will be introduced to many activists and leaders from intersecting social movements throughout Canadian history. On Blackboard you will also find a list of activists and leaders that you can choose from. All activists and leaders may be considered with Professor approval if it is shown by the learner, that the proposed leader has played an active role in a social movement.
2. You will create research report on your chosen activist or leader.
Conduct your research using Internet searches, Humber Library Discover Bar, Canadian Encyclopedia website and course readings/ resources (minimum of 3 credible sources are required). Your final research report must present the following factual information:
A. Brief biographical information: Focus on key details, especially those that illuminate the leader’s commitment to social justice and transformation. Details on their early family/work life that are significant to their leadership and advocacy commitment may be included.
B. Key contributions to Canadian and/or Global social movements such as Child Care Advocacy Movements, Women’s Movements, Indigenous Rights Movements, LGBTQ Movements, Disability Rights Movements, Human Rights Movements, Anti-Racist Movements and so on. This may include: demonstration of work that has sought to create societal change to benefit key stakeholders (i.e., children, families, the ECE profession, communities / society particularly as it relates to issues of diversity, inclusion, social justice, and the empowerment of equity seeking groups); Advocacy; Research projects the leader has undertaken; Authorship of notable articles, books, other writings, etc.
C. Leadership style(s) & supporting rationale (why) (connected to Ren-Etta Sullivan, 2010) and traits/characteristics supporting social justice (connected to Sykes, 2014).
3. Design a one-page creative poster based on your research report. You can be as creative as you wish, but if you design your poster by hand you must be able to scan and upload the finished document to the Blackboard Dropbox. There are many free online programs that you can use to create poster (Canva, Piktochart, Adobe Spark, etc.) as well as Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. The poster should draw the viewer in with titles and headings, images, graphics, descriptions and pertinent information to provide an accurate overview of the activist or leader. Include in-text citations for any information taken from your report and additional citations for images/graphics used in the poster. Any additional citations for images/graphics should appear in your report’s Reference List.
