1. Boarding schools and Dawes Acts were two methods that were used. They were used by the U.S. Government to assimilate the indigenous people into the American ways. We have boarding schools which are run by the government. These boarding schools were aiming to remove the indigenous people from their families, and even their culture. The boarding school was forcing the western ways to the indigenous children. We also have the Dawes Act which was a policy to break up the indigenous communal land and to focus on individual land ownership. The Dawes Act also assimilated the indigenous people into American ways of living such as farming and possibly ranching. The boarding schools were taking away culture from the indigenous people while the Dawes Act was making the indigenous people losing more land which was a way of destroying the indigenous peoples way of living.
2. There were many ways that the indigenous families resisted the influences of the boarding schools. Many families were refusing to send their children to these boarding schools. Some other families were sending them however on the back end, secretly they were teaching them their own languages at home away from the boarding schools.
3. The lasting effects of boarding schools are still taking place in today’s world. The boring school really messed up the school systems and it had a negative effect on the indigenous people by loss of language, cultures, and traditions. Some children that went to these boarding schools never came back so there was a loss of children at some point. These boarding schools I can imagine gave much trauma to such people. This was horrible because it has also affected generation by generation leaving students health in bad ways. Some students have suffered from substance abuse and even mental health issues due to this.
4. The Gold Rush was a crazy time for the Mid 1800’s. It really influenced and brought many travelers from other locations straight to California in search of real gold floating around in the rivers. This was not a good time for the indigenous people because it led to violence and displacement against them. On the other hand, we have the civil war from 1861 to 1865. This ended slavery but after that time there was a period of reconstruction because the government needed to build for the country. The government also needed to grant new rights for the new and free slaves. This period was also in a violent stage of time because there was also violence with the black people as well as the indigenous people.
5. This chapter in our textbook is called:Indian Country.” It was called this name because it was used by the U.S. government to tell the areas on where the indigenous people were living. People thought that the indigenous people were foreign so that this term came up from the government. People were looking at the indigenous people differently as if they were different from the rest of the people in society. This term was used to refer to the indigenous people and it shows how the people were forced to live with the Americans and adapt to the American ways even with traumatic experiences.
6. This textbook chapter that I read connects to the term “manifest Destiny”. The idea behind manifest destiny was the concept of how the U.S. had a divine right to expand westward. This idea was here to dominate the land and the people who were encountered in it. This idea also put the indigenous people at risk due to violence and also this idea was to spread American influences.
7. The military killed the plains buffalo to control and subdue the in=digous people. The indigenous people realized the buffalo was their way of life and it was killed by the military. The song Buffalo Soldier from Bob Marley was analyzed through history as the struggle of black people and how they were oppressed and wanted to fight for freedom. This song’s lyrics also connect with the indigenous people when they were fighting for the Indian wars and also fighting for liberation.
8. In this research question I chose to research Geronimo, who was an apache leader during the Indian wars. Geronimo was also a warrior and was born in 1829 in Arizona. Geronimo was an Apache leader and was an important figure in the Apache resistance against American expansionism. He also led raids and attacks against the U.S. He had speedfull attacks with stealth. Geronimo highlights the violence of the Indian wars and how there were political conflicts that came with this too. There was high brutality and violence that was also occurring but Geronimo’s leadership was very strategic and it gave strength. Gernomimo was important to help understand the history of the experiences faced during the Indian wars.
