Assessment Description
Implementing cross-curricular lessons can be difficult for content area teachers if they do not understand how to properly embed literacy skills into content area activities. It may be necessary for a reading/literacy specialist to demonstrate this process when helping a teacher develop and implement their cross-curricular lesson plans.
Allocate at least 3 hours in the field to support this field experience.
Select one of the lessons from the unit plan created in Topic 5 to implement with the whole class or small group of students selected in Clinical Field Experience A. Prior to the implementation, share the lesson with your mentor teacher and discuss how you plan to address both the English Language Arts and content area standards. During the implementation, pay specific attention to how students respond to the literacy learning within the content area and any differentiation needed for students in the group. Following the lesson, discuss with your mentor teacher what went well with the lesson and any gaps in the instruction. Determine the next steps using assessment data collected during the lesson to monitor student progress.
Use any remaining field experience hours to assist the mentor teacher in providing instruction and support to the class.
In 500-750 words, reflect on the implementation of the lesson and how you differentiated for the needs of the students in the group. Include the following in your reflection:
Summary of the lesson implementation.
Any gaps in the instruction and how they could be addressed in a subsequent lesson.
Any differentiation that was implemented, before or during the lesson, for specific students or group of students.
How you applied various forms of assessment, aligned to the lesson objectives, to monitor the progress of diverse learners and identify next steps.
Examples of the feedback provided to students during and after the lesson and a rationale that supports the feedback provided.
How this experience will guide your future professional practice related to implementing and differentiating cross-curricular instruction that meets the needs of all students.
