Explain what the melting curve means in Figure A
CSULA Earths Interior Questions
For Images A through F, name the structure shown in the image, the type of stress that formed it, and if the rocks were brittle or ductile when it formed. For normal and reverse faults, identify if the hanging wall is on the left or the right of the image. So there are 3 answers per image except normal and reverse faults have 4 answers each.
Earth’s Interior
1) Explain what the melting curve means in Figure A above. What does it mean to be to the left of the melting curve? What does it mean to be to the right of the melting curve?
2) Using the graph, what is the approximate melting temperature of rock at the surface? What is the approximate melting temperature of rock at a depth of 1000 km?
3) Explain what the geotherm is in Figure A. What does it show? For example, what does it say about Earth’s interior at a depth of 1000 km? What does it say about Earth’s interior at a depth of 4000 km?
4) Based upon what you see with the geotherm and the melting curve in Figure A above, would you describe the asthenosphere as molten or solid? Explain. (Don’t look this up–use the graph)
5) Figure B shows viscosity of Earth’s different layers with depth. The definition of viscosity is on the diagram. Using that, briefly explain how the viscosity of honey compares to the viscosity of water.
6) Figure B shows that the viscosity of the lower mantle is high. But the figure below from the text (Figure 12.12), shows that heat is moved by convection throughout the mantle. Briefly explain what convection is and give an example of how it works. How does your explanation of convection fit into Figure B’s depiction of high viscosity in the lower mantle? Does it make sense or does it make you have questions? If so, write the questions here.
