Then analyze the impact of interest groups and lobbyist in by answering the following questions:
1. Whom do they benefit and how do they affect our society?
2. What incentives do interest groups offer to get individuals to join the group, and what strategies do interest groups use in their attempts to gain favorable policy. To answer this question please research two interest groups. Go to the Web sites of two interest groups with related interests and identify the incentives they each offer individuals to join. Compare and contrast the competing interests of the two groups.
3. Analyze the overall effect of interest groups on democracy. How do they further the pluralistic or the elite interest? Is this a benefit or an obstacle to democracy?
Your essay should be between 500 and 600 words, double-spaced and in APA format, with parenthetical citations and a Reference List. A cover page is not necessary.

Interest groups and lobbyists have a significant impact on our society as they represent various organizations and individuals with shared interests and influence policy-making decisions. These groups primarily benefit the members or the organizations they represent. For instance, business interest groups may lobby for policies that favor the growth and profitability of their industries, while environmental groups may advocate for policies that promote conservation and protection of natural resources. The impact of interest groups on society can be both positive and negative, depending on the goals and values of the group and their influence on policymaking decisions.
Interest groups offer various incentives to get individuals to join, such as networking opportunities, access to exclusive events and resources, and the chance to influence policy-making decisions. For example, the National Rifle Association (NRA) offers members access to training programs, exclusive merchandise, and discounts on firearms and ammunition purchases. On the other hand, the Sierra Club offers members access to environmental advocacy resources, volunteer opportunities, and discounted merchandise. Interest groups also use various strategies to gain favorable policy, such as lobbying legislators, sponsoring political ads and campaigns, and conducting grassroots mobilization efforts.
To compare and contrast the competing interests of two groups, let’s take the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) and the National Taxpayers Union (NTU). The AARP offers senior citizens various discounts and resources, including health insurance plans, travel benefits, and access to financial and legal services. The NTU, on the other hand, advocates for limited government spending and tax reform, aiming to lower taxes for individuals and businesses. These groups have competing interests, as the AARP may advocate for policies that benefit senior citizens, such as Social Security and Medicare expansion, while the NTU may lobby for tax cuts that may limit government spending on these programs.
The overall effect of interest groups on democracy is a topic of debate. Some argue that interest groups further the pluralistic interest, as they represent diverse viewpoints and give voice to marginalized groups. Others argue that interest groups promote the elite interest, as they often represent the wealthy and powerful and have greater access to policymakers. While interest groups may enhance democracy by providing a forum for participation and representation, they may also pose a threat to democracy if they become too influential and distort policy outcomes. Therefore, it is crucial to maintain transparency and accountability in the lobbying process and ensure that policymakers are responsive to the broader public interest rather than the interests of a particular group.
