Background
background relevant to the policy for which you have chosen;
Food security is referred to as a countrys availability of food and an individuals ability to obtain and afford sufficient, safe, and nutritious food. As the price of food continues to rise the number of individuals experiencing food insecurities has increased. This is causing a growing demand for food banks, combined with limited financial support among most provinces in Canada has resulted in increasing reliance on food donations from the agri-food industry.
In the past year, Statistics Canada has reported an 11.4% increase in the price of food, and it is expected to continue rising from 5%-7%? in this coming year (Humes, 2022). Additionally, the price of the most substantial foods including vegetables, dairy and meat that have the most health benefits are expected to increase the most. Due the these increases the average family of four consisting of a mother, father, son, and daughter will spend nearly $1,065.60 more than observed in 2022? (Humes, 2022). Yet, the increasing food inflation rates are not being mirrored by increasing wages and salaries causing a major problem of food insecurity.
The common question as to why the price of food is rapidly increasing is not simple. There are many influencing factors that include climate change, disruptions in the supply chain, carbon taxes, raising transportation costs, etc. But one of the most interesting factors is the Government of Canada does not legally guarantee food as a human right, nor is food considered a public good. For example, the Right to Food has never been enshrined in the Charter of Rights and Freedom? (Martorell, 2017). Therefore, now there is a call for action for the government of Canada to implement a food security policy to make sustainable changes limiting the raising cost of food as it is a living necessity.
Nature of the Problem
the nature of the problem being addressed;
It should come as no surprise that the quality of food that goes into our bodies will be mimicked to the outcome. Researchers have developed multiple studies that have proven a correlation between food insecurities on overall health. With the lack of quality foods, there has been an increasing number of individuals who are experiencing serious mental illnesses (SMI), including stress and anxiety (Cunningham et al., 2022). Then these SMIs make physical activities more challenging putting individuals at a greater risk of obesity (Cunningham et al., 2022). Similar studies found that food insecurities put individuals at a higher risk of birth defects, anemia, asthma, behaviour problems, depression, suicide, and worse oral health (Gundersen & Ziliak, 2015). Furthermore, studies have been conducted stating that 41% of university students in the United States are facing food insecurity, which has a major impact on their sleep quality, health status and academic performance (Ryan et al., 2021). However, these are our future leaders, so a change must happen quickly.
The problems regarding food insecurity are much deeper than seen on the surface, however, if these issues do not get addressed quickly then globally, we will be facing significant issues for decades to come.
