We have read and analyzed a number of reviews in this unit. Imagine yourself as a writer for Valencia College’s student newspaper The Valencia Voice. You want to tell other students about a book, concert performance, game, film, television series or episode, artist, or product that you like – or don’t like – in an article that will published in the Valencia Voice. Your purpose is to write a fair review of your subject that will engage and inform your peers. Assume that your audience may not have much knowledge about the subject of the review.
Your essay should include the six characteristics of review writing:
Relevant information about the subject
Criteria for the evaluation
A well-supported evaluation
Attention to the audience’s needs and expectations
An authoritative tone
Awareness of the ethics of reviewing
You will find helpful information from Everyone’s an Author in Chapter 16 “Writing a Review,” particularly the Roadmap.
You will also need to do a bit of research about your subject. Although your subject will be the primary source of information, you will need to consult other sources to find background information or to become aware of what else has been written about your subject.
Special Requirements
Word Count: No fewer than 1000 words, no more than 1300 words. Any essay that has a word count of fewer than 800 words will not receive a grade of more than 50%. Any essay that has a word count of over 1300 words will receive a 10% deduction.
Use MLA Style heading for essays without cover pages. Be sure to include headers that contain your last name and page number for each page. Be sure to double space entire essay. See sample research paper in Everyone’s an Author on page 601-617.
You must use at least two outside sources (other reviews written about your subject) in writing this essay. You will need to cite the sources that you use in the text of your essay. See “In-Text Documentation” (565 – 571) in Everyone’s an Author for in-text citation examples. Any essay that does not include In-Text Documentation and a Works Cited list will receive a grade of 0. Any essay that contains a Works Cited list, but lacks In-Text Documentation will not receive a grade higher than 50%.
