Politics?? Ethics is the area of philosophy that deals with questions about morality and assesses the rightness or wrongness of actions and decisions? How we SHOULD act vs. how we do act Morals together = morality >> a system of norms/values that guide Altruism in moral reasoning – looking beyond myself Moral reasoning is a decision-making process that requires individuals to use criteria such as moral values, moral principles, and/or the anticipated moral consequences to determine whether a particular action is right or wrong or whether we have a moral obligation to act in a particular manner toward others. Strategic reasoning is also a decision-making process and has the objective of acting based on what will reward or bring the greatest advantage to a person or to that persons in-group?. Designation of terms Moral uses good? and bad?; ethics uses right? and wrong? Moral v. Utilitarianism Emphasizes the good of others over the good of the individual decision-maker – greatest amount of happiness to the greatest amount of people Best Interests Bringing about the most good for everyone? p22 Sportspersonship Fairness in following rules Summary: Large number of definitions – need to practice using them to become comfortable integrating them in discussions – TAKE THE REPS! Moral decision-making takes many different forms and is quite different than strategic decision-making as a whole. We need to understand the HOW people make moral decisions (process) and the WHY (motives) – understanding the WHY can help us practice Emotional Intelligence (leadership) skills.
