During the 1950s the United States enjoyed a period of baby boomers and long-awaited prosperity. It is no wonder why rock & roll turned out to be a cultural phenomenon, instead of just a music genre. Disc jockey Alan Freed may have invented the term rock and roll? but it clear that no single artist invented Rock and Roll. As you have learned from lecture, there are five key ingredients that go into Rock and Roll:
Swing/ shuffle rhythm: The music utilizes a 2:1 rhythm.
Backbeat: Beats 2 and 4 are emphasized usually with the use of a guitar or a snare drum.
Small ensembles: The artist is playing on stage or records with only 2-4 other musicians, employing basic arrangements that emphasize intimate and exciting textures over complicated layering and glamorous sounds.
Blues-style singing: The singing style includes blue notes or syncopated notes.
Television-ready personalities and/or ‘novelty acts’: The artists visual charisma on television, and their ability to convey a simple, charming idea, in an immediate way, to an increasingly teenage? consumer audience.
YOUR ASSIGNMENT (~500 WORDS)
Pick a recording from any Unit 3 listening list from an artist who, for you, embodies the essence of Rock and Roll at its birth. Briefly discuss the recording using the Five Ingredients of Rock and Roll? mentioned above.
In order to support your case, give a definition of rock & roll in your own words. Your main task is to justify why that artist could be credited as the inventor? of rock & roll, under your particular definition. Defend your artists role in the history of the genre by briefly discussing 1-3 other recordings in comparison to it, and by making reference to at least required and one elective reading in this unit; for example incorporating the claims of Peterson (1990) course reading “Why 1955?…”, or George Lipsitz’s “Class Origins of Rock and Roll” (required readings), plus one of the elective readings, such as Ake’s “Jazz Historiography and the Problem of Louis Jordan”, or Marcus “The Rockabilly Moment” (and you are welcome to make cases using the other articles as well)?as an opportunity to look beyond stylistic categories like country and “rhythm and blues” to thinking about the cultural forces that were at work across many cross-sections of society. (Any of the elective readings will potentially strengthen your argument; choose at least one.)
This assignment is a little “tongue-in-cheek” ? we all know that no one truly invented Rock and Roll, and that in fact, the style emerges as a sensibility among audiences, rather than musicians. But exploring the ways that artists had an “early” take on this style can be a fascinating way to uncover the distances between small-scale musical communities and the individuals within them, from the larger world of popular culture. Feel free to take a tongue-in-check approach to praising or denouncing the authenticity of a particular artist.
