1. Two sugar solutions of equal concentration are separated by a membrane which is permeable to sugar molecules. Some of the sugar molecules on the right side of the membrane contain radioactive carbon. (Making a molecule radioactive serves to label it so that specific molecules can be identified later. Other than that, a labeled molecule has the same physical properties as an unlabeled molecule.) What would you predict would be the final distribution of radioactive sugar on the two sides of the membrane some time later? Complete the diagram below and discuss. Explain what caused in the result you see?
2. A similar container as above is separated by a membrane with unknown permeability properties. To compartment A was added a 10% aqueous salt solution and to compartment B was added pure water. A student predicted that the solution in compartment A would be less than 10% salt if measured the next day. What was this student most likely assuming? (Hint: there are three different assumptions the student could be making about the permeability characteristics of this membrane which would have the same result?I have done the first one for you. The dialysis bag was permeable to both glucose and water. If the student measured glucose movement out of the bag and glucose movement into the bag, which of the following would she most likely find? Explain your answer, and why you could rule out the others.
