The Impact of Matriarchal and Patriarchal Approaches to Global Leadership: Examining Gender and Cultural Norms in an International Context
Introduction
Global leadership study is usually gendered as a male in describing the overriding influence of men in leadership positions than women. One of the notable differences between patriarchal and matriarchal societies is power distribution. While a patriarchal society relies on power over others, a matriarchal rule instead puts more pressure on men and treats leadership as something intrinsic. Meaning that a matriarchal approach revolves around intuitive, supportive, and collaborative efforts as opposed to a patriarchal approach that usually dictates and demands. As such, modern anthropologists of gender are increasingly paying attention to the social construction of gender ideology, exploring how individuals interact with the cultural norms and gendered expectations of their socio-cultural contexts. This paper will explore the impact of matriarchal and patriarchal approaches to global leadership on gender and cultural norms in an international context. It will explore how these two approaches shape how women are seen, heard, and valued in global leadership roles. The research will focus on the differences between the two approaches and their respective effects on gender and cultural norms in different countries. It will also examine the implications of the two approaches on the global economy and the potential implications for future generations.
In this paper, the researcher will apply insight from the great man leadership theory to contribute to global leadership. It will draw on narratives of women leaders in Middle East countries to investigate how they determine their status in senior positions and build their leadership identities. Although sociocultural factors, religious ideologies, and gender roles can be counteractive, it is an agency that pertains to the decision to seek space for leadership for women and provides them with a way to navigate prevailing sociocultural norms and expectations that hinder equality. The women in this research will discuss the patriarchal approach as a widespread gender ideology created at the juncture of the control of women. The study will contribute to the list of studies on global leadership and aid in developing a theory by showing how Middle East women engage in compliance, and defiance efforts to expand the limits of what is generally acceptable.
Understanding the implications of different global leadership approaches allows people to create policies and strategies that promote gender equality and cultural tolerance. This research will also benefit organizations that want to understand how gender roles and cultural norms affect their operations. This research will help them better understand how to create an inclusive environment for all employees and how to promote a culture of respect for diverse backgrounds. This paper will emphasize the need to avoid essentialist, reductive assumptions about the patriarchal or matriarchal approach that can, among other things, put unnecessary pressure on women in leadership roles. To this end, the paper will differentiate leadership from ethics and discuss how various challenges that arise from patriarchy and matriarchy might be addressed.
The Rationale of the Research
Several studies have been conducted on theories and practices of patriarchy and matriarchy in U.S literature. Most of these pieces of research indicated that eliminating patriarchal ideologies from global leadership has significant positive impacts in the workplace, including improving employee productivity and satisfaction level (Henry et al., 2020). Patriarchal ideologies tend to subject women to economic dependence, violence, and the peripherals of decision-making. On the other hand, the matriarchal approach believes in the complementary leadership roles of men and women, leading to equality in global leadership.
Problem Statement
Patriarchal ideology has discouraged women from becoming globally competitive for future careers and success (Strawser et al., 2021).
Thus, backing gender equality in global leadership is essential for empowering women to become globally competitive in their careers and success. As such, the impact of patriarchal and matriarchal approaches needs further study in global leadership.
Research Aim
The overarching goal of this research is to gather factual knowledge about how patriarchal and matriarchal approaches impact global leadership and to determine whether treating power as something that comes from within can bridge the gender gap at the global leadership level.
Objectives
Primary objective
To determine the impact of a patriarchal and matriarchal approach to global leadership.
Other objectives will include:
To determine how patriarchal and matriarchal approach impacts men’s and women’s participation at the global leadership level
To determine how patriarchal and matriarchal approach impacts different countries
Research Questions
Do patriarchal and matriarchal approaches affect gender participation at the global leadership level?
Which nations are impacted most by the patriarchal and matriarchal approaches to leadership?
Scope of the study
This study will be carried out in the Middle East region to assess the diversity and complexity of gender in leadership. The North African countries would be considered for comparison where necessary.
Literature Review
It is important to ignore unconscious bias against communal traits and choose leaders who can support their followers development and success? and not just based on who is loud and confident. Such decisions will automatically allow more women to dominate at workplace in leadership roles, and the outcome may be characterized by improved performance in terms of corporate social responsibility. In recent years, womens status has made significant improvement in a?global context. However, women continue to lack access to power and public life compared to men. This section will review the literature on cultural constructions of gender, describing the differences between matriarchy and patriarchy and how these two realms have attracted increasing attention from a global leadership perspective. The idea that women are passed from the paternalistic domain of their fathers into the care of their husbands reflects a great gender ideology regarding the relations between men and women in society.
Global leadership treats gender as a variable in isolation from other dynamic social categories like culture. Specifically, the patriarchal approach may limit people’s implicit understanding of the unique leadership experiences and women’s contributions to society. Reviewing the literature on how realms of matriarchy and patriarchy attract attention from a global leadership perspective will situate both terms within a longstanding debate about feminist leadership theory and discussions of Arab and African values as they pertain to leadership. The paper is thus a response to a broader interdisciplinary debate on what leadership scholars mean when discussing “women’s leadership in the global context.”
The research will begin with a review of the literature on matriarchal and patriarchal approaches to global leadership. It will explore the various definitions of the two approaches and how they have shaped international relations and gender and cultural norms in different countries. It will also review the various theoretical frameworks used to explain the different approaches. For example, it will look at the differences in how the approaches have been used in countries with different levels of development and the implications of this on the global economy. The research will explore the two approaches’ implications for future generations. This will involve a review of the various studies that have examined the effects of matriarchal and patriarchal approaches on the development of future generations in terms of their gender and cultural norms, as well as their economic well-being. It will also consider how they may have contributed to the development of the global economy and the rise of the ‘knowledge economy’ It will assess the various studies conducted in this area, focusing on the findings related to the potential benefits and drawbacks of the two approaches. It will also consider the potential impact of these approaches on future generations regarding their values and beliefs, lifestyle choices, and ability to thrive in a rapidly changing world. This research will also explore the implications of matriarchal and patriarchal approaches to global leadership on human rights. This will involve a review of existing literature on the subject to better understand the various rights and freedoms impacted by these two approaches. This will include a discussion of how the approaches might impact women’s rights and the protection of their rights and freedoms in different countries worldwide. It will consider the broader implications of these two approaches for human rights and their potential to be used as a tool for promoting global gender equality. It will explore how matriarchal and patriarchal approaches may contribute to the rise of nationalism and what this could mean for human rights in the future. The research will also explore the impact of matriarchal and patriarchal approaches to global leadership on gender and cultural norms in an international context. It will provide an analysis of the different approaches, as well as the implications of these approaches on the global economy and future generations. Exploring the differences between the two approaches will enable this research to help in understanding better the impact of gender and culture on global leadership.
Methodology
This study will combine both qualitative and quantitative approaches to inquiry. The selected company’s records from 2018-2023 will provide data for quantitative analysis. Semi-structured interviews will serve as the source of information on the qualitative end. Despite the recent scholarly strides, studies conceptualizing women’s experiences in global leadership remain insufficient. As such, a gap persists in both the process and circumstances of their experiences and how they are tied to socio-cultural values surrounding women. People usually assume that women are more sensitive than men to work-family clashes and thus may not effectively make career sacrifices. In meeting the overall objective of this research, this paper will involve a qualitative study of women in global leadership roles to explore how the two approaches are being implemented in different countries and how this impacts gender and cultural norms. It will also involve a quantitative study to analyze the impact of the two approaches on the global economy. This will include a comparison of countries such as Saudi and West African countries where matriarchal and patriarchal approaches are used to determine the effects of the approaches on economic growth, income inequality, and other economic indicators. This method will enable the researcher to explore, analyze and comprehend how patriarchal and matriarchal socio-cultural norms influence conceptualizations of global leadership. The strength of this research lies in its ability to generate new, useful insight into gender and cultural norms in an international context. To investigate a great gender ideology regarding the relations between men and women in society, the researcher will apply an explorative career-narrative approach using in-depth semi-structured interviews.
According to Tlaiss & Kauser (2019), narratives are an advantageous investigative resource for making sense of the human experience, and analyzing narratives offer great insight into society’s worldviews and thinking. Moreover, narratives will help the researcher understand how the gender gap persists in many societies. To understand how matriarchal and patriarchal approaches relate to cultural roles and gender ideology, the research will contextualize experiences by analyzing the public discourse on gender and leadership in the Middle East.
The participants in this study will receive oral and written information regarding the nature and aim of the research. The information will be written in the local language, and respondents will be reminded and reassured that participation is voluntary and can choose not to comment on sensitive issues. Moreover, the participants will be informed to easily withdraw from the exercise anytime they feel without having to offer any explanations. Additionally, the researcher will obtain written consent from all the respondents who meet the inclusion criteria before starting the exercise. The research will ensure confidentiality and anonymity by using codes to replace the participants name. The interviews will be subjected to thematic analysis.
Findings and Discussion
This part will present the participants narratives of how they identify with the concept of global leadership. The researcher will analyze the narratives through a great man theory to provide account of how the concept of global leadership evolve in a web of intersecting patriarchal and matriarchal approaches on one hand, and the desire to bridge the gender gap, on the other.
Conclusion
This section will summarize the findings of the study and discuss how it provides unique insights into the patriarchal and matriarchal approach to global leadership.
Finally, it will discuss how the paper makes manifold contributions and limitations and suggestions for future research.
