Introduction to Fiction Writing: Synopsis
Format: MLA: Modern Language Association (Google Purdue Owl MLA for details):
Include a title that informs and engages
Double space (including between paragraphs: disable the automatic extra space)
Use one-inch margins
12-point font (Times New Roman or Arial)
Number pages
Due Date: Tuesday, February 14, before class time (Please email synopsis as a Word doc
attachment to [email protected].)
In three-fourpages, please write a critical synopsis of Megan Abbotts The Little Men.? Unlike most synopses, this one should include brief, selective quotations supporting major statements about the story.
The synopsis should account for the following questions. It should be organized/developed using a logic that is consistent with the story (not the assigned questions).
(1) In The Little Men,? what is the main mystery? What are the (related) mysteries? What crimes and/or transgressionsneed resolution? How do the mysteries/crimes/transgressions cohere in a single story?
(2) How does the story develop from beginning through middle to end? What impediments delay the resolution and how so? What is the climax? Does the resolution answer all questions (solve all mysteries) or leave some uncertain? Are there twists or surprises, and if so, what are they and how does the story create them?
(3) When and where does the mystery occur? In what general place/specific place(s)? In what season(s), month(s), hours(s)? (Note/quote specific information.)
(4) What are the most important qualities of the central character? Do they change over the course of the story?(Note/quote specific information.)
(5) Who are the major secondary characters, and what are their most important qualities? How do these characters interact with the main character? (Note/quote specific information.)
Please make use of the quotation guide on page three.
I am happy to discuss ideas and drafts with you as you work on your synopsis.
Synopsis Notes
Although many synopses start without naming an author or title, in academic situations its best to name them:
E.g. In Megan Abbotts The Little Men,? Penny . . . .
Precise Quotation: When quoting, double (or triple) check accuracy. Do the words and
punctuation in your quotation precisely match those in the original text? Of course you can use brackets or ellipses to add or subtract words and punctuation, as long as you maintain the original sense.
Verb Tense Consistency: Conventionally, when writing a synopsis (or a critical essay on a
literary text), use present tense verbs consistently.
Synopsis Writing (for Short Stories)
How to Quote
The following are some quotation conventions, consistent with the MLA style guide. Please follow them when writing your synopsis.
When quoting, be extra careful to
(1) Contextualize the quoted passage sufficiently. If the passage includes a pronoun, be sure that your introduction to it identifies the antecedent.
(2) Aim for clarity and conciseness by quoting only the words that exemplify or instantiate the point you are making.
(3) Integrate quotations into conventional sentence syntax. If you need to remove words, letters, or punctuation from a passage that you are quoting, mark the deletion with a bracketed ellipsis: [. . .]. If you need to insert words, letters, or punctuation, surround the addition in [brackets].
(4) Cite page numbers parenthetically at the end of a sentence in which a quotation appears. The parentheses should appear after the end quotation marks, and the period should appear after the parentheses. If your quotation ends with a question mark or exclamation point, though, this punctuation should appear inside the end quotation marks.
