What is your status compared to others? Are you ‘more influenced’ by some people more than others? Look at the last few emails (between 2-3; not text messages) that you sent to som
Social Psychology is defined as the scientific study of how different circumstances impact us as well as how people perceive, interact and connect with other people. These connections can be described as how we begin to relate to each other and how our reactions are perceived by others.(Myers and Twenge, P.13)
Conformity is when someone is influenced by someone else and how it affects and changes your behavior. These influences not only change your behavior by it mimicking the behavior of others but the influence of their behavior on your behavior. Two specific types of conformity are compliance and acceptance. Acceptance can be described as believing the action of the group is positive and it has an influence on you to want to belong and join the group’s views or actions. Compliance on the other hand is more when you simply follow an expected act such as in school. The action may not be one you agree with but influenced by conduct codes etc. Obediance is a type of compliance that reacts to requests or demands to follow orders you wouldn’t engage in otherwise or following the rules.(Myers and Twenge, P.144)
I believe conformity can directly align with Social Psychology. These different influences and decisions on our behaviors are temptations influenced by our surroundings and society. They can be positive or negative.
Are these actions considered a darkside for human nature? I think they could be, depending of course on the circumstances. Being able to stand up and away from what is accepted by the majority, being different can be difficult and even scary. From following the crowd and peer pressure perhaps different behaviors or weaknesses can certainly turn dark. Hope for this darkness in human nature is found in the Christian Worldview. It provides strength through believing in God and His promises to help us make decisions of our actions toward the good. “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” (ESV, 2001,Romans 12:2)
