Hello my fellow classmates and Professor,
Children are born naturally curious. By exploring and using their senses of sight, touch, sound, smell and taste; children also learn about themselves and their environment. So this discussion is not hard for me. I like to share with you when I was 9 years old. I have been interested in worms, insects and animals since then, more like fascinated.
My parents got me a microscope when I was ten years old for my birthday. I used to dig up worms and insects and put them under a microscope. My parents used to tell me, “you are a girl.” My mom also said, “don’t you want glamour and glory as a girl?” I am me and I do not want to be like other girls. She said, “You are a leader, not a follower.” I can remember that to this day. Every since I have been rescuing animals and still look under a microscope at animal poop, insects, and trying to figure stuff out on my own.
So how I been doing it all these years on my own is the investigative approach. Teaching and learning to where students are provided with opportunities to investigate a problem, value a childs question, accept as a teacher that exploration is often messy, have microscopes in class, dig, plant flowers or vegetables outside of the class window, have a small animal that they can help take care of, and no matter what, as a teacher; support them with their curiosity.
