I need a good reply to my classmate’s discussion board below. Some paragraphs will be nice, and can you please include the references on where you got this information from also? The reply really just has to be about how you feel about their discussion and add an opinion too.
What is the role of a nutrition professional in nutritional genomics?
Nutrigenomics is the study between nutrients along with the bioactive ingredients within our foods and how they interact with the human genome and ultimately express through disease/health. This is a new and emerging field filled with some controversy. I feel like the study of nutrigenomics shows us even more how individualized we each are and concretes the need for care to delivered as such, maybe even more so than we already do. We have identified general actions or things that can cause disease, but this gives even more information and may start to answer the question of “Why some and not others?”1
In regard to a nutrition professional’s role in nutrigenomics, I feel our book states it perfectly, “The recommendation of one diet intervention in response to one polymorphism is too simplistic, and as research evolves, practice will in time evolve too.” It sounds like eventually we will be able to incorporate the current research into practice, but how much and at what level is still to be determined. This is a great area for nutrition research, one many of us will have the opportunity to be a part of if we should choose.1
Should we modify or change recommendations we make to prevent diabetes, obesity, and cancer based on nutritional genomics and ethics? Why or why not?
I do not believe we should currently change any recommendations as much of the research is still being generated. The current recommendations will still have a profound impact on overall prevention of diabetes, obesity, and cancer. Every positive change we make will in turn have a positive impact on our genetics. So, even though we won’t know the tiny details of the genome testing, we can still rest assured that the positive changes we are currently recommending are heavily influencing the genes as well. “While the roots of epigenetic dysregulation lie in the period before birth, there is an opportunity to influence the epigenome at time points later in life as well.”1
Are gene-environment interactions relevant to public health nutrition?
Yes, I believe gene-environment interactions are relevant to Public Health Nutrition. As this is an emerging field, Public Health has a responsibility to establish and maintain ethics and proper research studies. There is a clear distinction between our genes and our environments, and in many ways beyond. The CDC has established the Office of Genomics and Precision Public Health (OGPPH) to help integrate the research and share the advances that have been made. This office was created in 1997, as a result from the Human Genome Project. They face many challenges going forward, competing priorities, misconceptions, lack of capacity, communication challenges, providing concrete evidence, and more. Showing that genomics is valuable in the clinical setting will be of great importance over the next decade.2 As stewards of good health, although change can be painful, the knowledge we seek is from God. “make your ear attentive to wisdom and inkling your heard to understanding.”3
