ABC Assignment – Align Behavior Change with Motivation, Self-Efficacy,
and Self-Regulation Theory
Theory in Action Activity: You will explore your history with change, motivation, and seeing change
PART I: YOUR HISTORY WITH CHANGE (8 pts)
We continually get conscious and unconscious messages that influence our motivation, the WHYS for
behaviors. Our role models, including parents, friends, and celebrities, influence the why. Companies that
market products (cars, phones, running shoes) have purposely branded them in specific ways to a
need.
as a gift or a chore.
7. How would/did you use the self-efficacy constructs (Mastery Experiences, Vicarious Experiences,
Verbal Persuasion, Somatic and Emotional States) toward the behavior change?
8. Take a moment to think about when you try/tried to change your behavior and complete the following
sentence:
“Most of the time, my primary reason and desire to X has been because I have wanted ___”
PART II: Do you have negative feelings about the behavior change? (3 pts)
Take a moment to explore any negative feelings you have with your relationship to the behavior that you
are/were interested in changing:
In general, when you think about the behavior, do you feel dread? Briefly explain.
Do you feel that there is a “right” way to do the behavior and that if you don’t do it that way, it’s not
worth doing? Briefly explain.
Do/did you currently do the behavior that you are/were interested in changing in ways that don’t feel
good to you? Briefly explain.
PART III: CHANGING VERSES SUSTAINING (2 pts)
It might feel easy to start a behavioral change but sustaining a change may be very challenging. Think
deeply about why it is/was important to you to change the behavior. When you identify this aspect, it will
help identify the motivation to continue the behavior change. Perhaps there have been past attempts to
change the behavior.
What did you identify as the reason for wanting to make the change?
Is/was your motivation internal or external?
Is/was the reason compelling enough to keep you motivated? In other words, on a scale from 0-10, how
important is/was the change? What would need to happen to make you more motivated to change and
to help to sustain the behavior?
pg. 3
PART IV: EXPLORE FINAL THOUGHTS AND BELIEFS ABOUT BEHAVIOR CHANGE
STEP 1: CHORE or GIFT (1pt)
On a scale of 1 to 5 – with 1 being “a chore to accomplish” and 5 being “gift to give yourself” – identify
the number that best describes how you feel/felt about the behavior:
1 2 3 4 5
CHORE GIFT
STEP 2: IDENTIFY CONFLICT (2 pts)
Identify conflicting beliefs.
List at least one belief that conflicts with the idea that your behavior “should” or “could” change
by completing the following:
? I learned this belief from:
______________________________________________________________
? If you have (or might have children, would you want them to hold this same
belief? YES / NO ______
STEP 3: TRY ON SOME PERMISSIONS (2 pts)
In this step you can “try on” PERMISSIONS just to see how it would feel to commit to the
behavior change. Remember, this is just an experiment to explore new ways of thinking.
Think about this: If you were going to make the behavior change and daily well-being a priority
on most days, what PERMISSIONS would you need to give yourself? (Examples are
permission to take care of yourself, to talk to your family about your needs, to leave work on
time each Mondays to attend a class.). Now try them on for size. (Remember this is just an
experiment. You are not being asked to make a behavior change.)
I will let myself “try on” the following two PERMISSIONS related to _________ (behavior
change) so that I may see how they feel:
Permission Difficulty Scale 1-10
Example: I will check e-mail only once a day on weekends ( 8 )
1
2.
pg. 4
Write the number next to each PERMISSION-from 1 (not at all) to 10 (very difficult) -that
reflects how difficult you think it would be to actually adopt these specific PERMISSIONS.
STEP 4: FINAL THOUGHTS (2 pts)
This assignment has explored your history with change, motivations, seeing change as a gift or
a chore, and explored giving yourself permission to change. How has this assignment
