Statement of Purpose
John R. Ellsworth
Liberty University
Doctor of Psychology (PhD) – General Psychology
I am seeking admission to the Doctorate program in General Psychology for the spring semester of 2023. A doctorate degree in psychology has been a lifelong dream, and after extensive research of other university programs, their specific areas of focus and concentration, length of time to complete, and my short – and long-term goals I decided the Liberty University program uniquely fit my academic requirements, my desire to gain a closer connection with my Christian faith, and the universities sensitivity to the needs of others. The PhD in General Psychology will not only help fulfill a dream goal, but will also help me to gain further in-depth knowledge of advanced psychology principles, to add a deeper level of faith to my practice, and to enhance my professional abilities as a mental game coach.
My educational goal is to learn as much as I can in an effort to become a better provider of mental game coaching to my clients. My spiritual goal is to renew and strengthen my faith in Christ and to incorporate a deeper commitment of faith into my professional practice. My professional goals are focused on strengthening my knowledge base in psychology and to incorporate the concepts learned to enhance my skills as a sports psychology practitioner. As was the case 22 years ago when entering the counseling and sports psychology field, I desire to continue offering a greater degree of insight, guidance and direction to help my clients pursue their goals.
After graduating from Hillsdale College in 1975 and then serving as a middle school, and high school teacher as well as a high school and college coach I discovered that I had a natural gift for listening, teaching, coaching, and offering practical and spiritual guidance. My faith carried forward in helping me achieve success Hillsdale College, teaching, professional sports, and during my time in corporate America. During a mid-life career crisis and ultimate decision to welcome change I came full-circle by returning to my natural calling to teach and guide others. At a spiritual level I am a teacher, and a coach, and feel blessed to have been able to achieve 22 years of success while guiding young adults in the game of sports and life.
The Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology with the focus on Marriage and Family therapy was the first step toward a focus on families and athletes from a sport psychology coaching perspective. The counseling psychology credential coupled with 3000 hours of clinical internship served to be invaluable in assessing and creating performance plans for my clients.
My professional practice involves working with the behavior patterns athletes and families struggle with while pursuing sports, and academic success. The majority of athletes and families I serve are in need of spiritual, physical, and emotional guidance as they navigate their path toward achieving greater joy from their sport performance. Much of the work I do involves assessment, education, and behavior change by helping each client navigate their thoughts, feelings, and patterns at the core of the challenges they face.
In an effort to help families support their children’s sports involvement the Protex Sports Foundation offered financial guidance to help children to remain actively engaged in physical activity and sports. At the start of the pandemic the parents of many of my clients found themselves in a “kids at home” crisis and unable to manage the complexities related to sudden influx with kids at home combined with work demands or the stress of not working and searching for new careers. The Protex Sports home school program was developed using media and communication tools to help stay at home kids to remain engaged in physical activity, and to keep a sense of structure and organization to their day. As a tool in support of teaching and guiding athletes The Mental Edge Journaling System was developed to help athletes monitor trends of their success through goal setting, success monitoring, confidence development, and self-esteem development confidence through the use affirmations and positive self-talk.
I am honored and grateful for the opportunity to pursue a lifelong goal to acquire my PhD in psychology. As a Liberty graduate student, I will use my faith to assist me in accomplishing the PhD’s rigorous requirements, to strengthen my service to Christ and to enhance my psychology expertise as I continue counseling athletes and parents.
