Each culture has different ideas on gender differences and the roles that each plays within their society. FOr example, in some Muslim cultures, women were a traditional dress that hides their faces and bodies from society. In America, gender roles are more broadly defined from an early age. We use blue and pink to associate the genders and even toys are classified as male or female. This is nothing new, though. A historical example was ancient Sparta where males were raised to be soldiers/warriors first and women supported that role in every way.
I read an article from MIT management. In this article, they describe a study where it was found that female employees were 14% less likely to be promoted than their male counterparts despite outperforming them and being less likely to quit (Somers, 2022). According to this study, this has to do with their perceived potential. This rating supports the stereotype that many still put on women in the workplace. This study shows the continued issues we have in our culture about gender and potential.
