Create a post response to the following. Give an agreeable or a disagreeable response. Discuss the key details of the following post. This week we not only read about impulsivity bias, but also took the test about our own implicit bias. For starters I had a slight knowledge what implicit bias were. I knew that they were a way that you looked at another subgroup in society, whether it be race, gender, and so on. Going into this week, I honestly thought that I did not have any. Looking at the test that we took, I learned very quickly that I do indeed have some bias on different groups that I thought I would never have. The test for starters was such an eye opener on what bias a person truly has although they may not know it. As we read it become more clear as to why you may not know about these bias. It was argued that they can be behavioral, or even subconscious. You may act upon a certain group of people, or lean away or towards a group, in a way that you do not know that you’re doing. I never thought of myself as leaning towards one group over another. I always joke that I dislike all people the same, as I prefer to stay to myself with really no friends. Many people may not realize that they have certain bias against people, but they may see it as a normal ideation that they have had towards subgroups their entire lives. They look at someone and see a different color, race, gender, and have these feelings towards them that may stem from a deep psychological point or one that may have been engrained in them from a paternal standpoint.
As we continued reading, I did not know about the different businesses and how they go about combating this bias with their employees and management. It was shocking to me that they believe that one day of “training” does the trick. Implicit bias is not something that can be easily unlearned in one or two days. This is something that needs to be worked on over a period of time. Within the reading it also talks about the more effective forms of training, which include helping employees to understand that they possibly do have bias, and what those bias are and against what groups of people. Once a person can identify that they do have a bias, and what that bias is, then they can begin to pin point the best options for helping them to overcome implicit bias in the workplace. It is understandable that many places cannot afford to have these training sessions, but there are less expensive ways that can help to lower the amount of bias. Overall, I can say that I will be taking more of these tests to help understand what other bias I may have so that I can begin to look into the long term solutions to help to rid my subconscious from them.
The original question to the post above.
What was the most difficult part of learning about your implicit biases? (Do not argue with the results or necessarily share the results of these two tests.) Simply discuss what was challenging about learning that you have implicit biases.
