In general, I am now thoroughly familiar with the wide variety of ethical codes and what a counselor must be aware of when doing his or her job. Also the circumstances when certain codes do need to be violated, for example when other people in society are at risk or when it involves minors. For me it was mostly educational to learn that these types of ethical codes are also very important for science in general. I already knew about being honest with clients, keeping information about clients anonymous and protecting vulnerable individuals but now I know that the APA standards are also important at a higher level: if people cannot trust researchers because of deceptive practices, science is put in a negative light and progress in science/knowledge cannot be made. Follow-up researchers do not know what results have been objectively and reliably obtained. I now know that the great progress in science is also a result of the existence of such codes.
I also learned that the ethical principles of the codes are not shared by all cultures. For example, the importance of individual autonomy is less dominant in some Eastern and African cultures. Thus, a counselor must be aware of his or her influence on the effectiveness of treatment/research. At a minimum, this means that a researcher must have knowledge about cultural differences and be sensitive to cultural differences.
What really impressed me was the video about the CIA case study in de 1950s about the research of LSD as a type of weapon. This video gave me a clear explanation of the ethical norms in psychology and was a good basis for this class. This example was interesting because it shows that one study can violate all the principles of responsible research. Also, I now know that because of such practices the APA Code of Ethics were introduced and that this has led to the fact that such harmful practices can no longer occur.
