- Introduction
Health care must be evidence-based, effective, efficient, and affordable; it must provide resources that meet the needs of the community. Nurse leaders must understand and thoroughly evaluate the environment to enable the efficient and equitable allocation of resources. A useful tool for this type of assessment is commonly called a windshield survey. Windshield surveys are what you might expect from the name. They are a way of gathering information about specific aspects of a community while driving around, such as the condition of roads, buildings, and housing.
This assessment provides an opportunity to examine the prevailing health conditions and social determinants of health in a community by completing an environmental analysis and a virtual windshield survey based on communities within the Vila Health system. Although Vila Health is a virtual lab, the communities represented in this simulation are real, enabling you to conduct an actual community health assessment.
Preparation
Executive leaders at Vila Health have asked you to provide them with your assessment of the health conditions in one of the communities served by the Vila Health system. Knowing that a windshield survey is needed to validate any underlying assumptions about the needs of the community and inform evidence-based decision making and strategic planning, you have decided to conduct a first-hand exploration of the community, followed up by an environmental analysis. An environmental analysis examines the factors that can influence the performance of a health care organization, which is important in a rapidly changing health care environment.
To prepare for the assessment, you are encouraged to begin thinking about how an environmental analysis and windshield survey contribute to assessing community health care needs. In addition, you may wish to:
- Review the assessment requirements and scoring guide to ensure that you understand the work you will be asked to complete.
- Review Guiding Questions: Assessing Community Health Care Needs [DOCX], which includes questions to consider and additional guidance on how to successfully complete the assessment.
- Note: As you revise your writing, check out the resources listed on the Writing Center’s Writing Supportpage.
The following resource is required to complete the assessment. - Vila Health: Environmental Analysis and Windshield Survey.
- Vila Health is a virtual environment that simulates a real-world health care system. In the various Vila Health scenarios, you will apply professional strategies, practice skills, and build competencies that you can apply to your coursework and in your career. The information you gather in this scenario will help you to complete the assessment.

Community Health Assessment
Executive Summary
One of the primary roles of a nurse is evaluating the public health of a given community
to identify challenges or nuisances affecting the health sector of the public. Archie-Booker et al.
(2020) articulate that occasionally, nurses employ the windshield survey simulation in their
efforts to perform community health assessments. The model acts as a fundamental tool for
acquiring vital info connected to the general public conditions and public health requirements
(Brock et al., 2020). According to Johnson et al. (2020), formulating a strategic nursing
disposition is necessary to establish the priority requirements of a given populace. The paper
briefly explains the environmental and social characteristics of Jordan City, a small town in
Minnesota, about education, recreation, transportation, and health and social services. The
assessment incorporates public and recreational facilities, ethics, beliefs, culture, and
demographics concerning public health within the community. The environmental analysis of a
particular community plays a critical role in assessing the health of the region.
General Condition and Public Health Needs
A windshield survey helps to understand the general conditions of Jordan City. The
assessment identifies the City's public health needs. According to Fuerst (2020), Jordan has
various public amenities varying from schools, health care centers, market places, churches, and
recreational facilities. The town's education sector provides vast opportunities for parochial and
public schools. Enrolling many students in the middle secondary and the expanding elementary
school education poses a concern for the public health safety of students. Finally, Jordan
residents enjoy recreational facilities, such as the Lagoon Park, which provides a conducive
environment to engage in sports and other recreational activities (Fuerst, 2020). Schools and

churches must organize events that will help create awareness of the importance of public health
in sundry recreational facilities. However, the assessment of the society involves direct
interactions with the City's residents, thus limiting the survey. Different individuals provide
varying information hindering the accuracy and precision of the windshield survey. Besides,
encountering strangers for evaluation compromises the security of an assessor during assessment.
So, it is necessary to assess safety risks before carrying out the survey, identify insecurity spots
within the City, and evaluate an individual approach towards different personalities to help to
assess safety risks. Therefore, one establishes a successful survey.
Environmental Analysis
Several environmental dynamics affect Jordan's public health. The town is rich in
industries and retails businesses. Though, ecological quality and violence or crimes pose a
significant health issue to the City. The surrounding region is vulnerable to air pollution because
of the concentrated population in the small City. Kiper & Geist (2020) insist that the effects of air
pollution on people are a considerable public health trepidation. Effluences from industries lead
to adverse climatic changes and expose humans to negative health developments that mainly
result in deaths. Fuerst (2021) adds that Jordan City has a concentrated population that concerts
violence and crimes, thus affecting the community's health patterns. The environmental analysis
provides a crucial phase of planning and implementing appropriate programs that enhance
perfect public health and also establish social determinants of the City's general health.
Several social determinants affect the town's public health. Socially, assenting to Archie-
Booker et al. (2020), ethnic inequalities and racial bigotries psychologically affect the health
patterns of many residents in the town. Too, easy access to mobile apps, web materials, and the
prevailing social media sites in the mounting information technologies also stage significant

influences on the City's public health. The City is stable economically, hence allocating resources
to enhance quality public health. Besides, the City provides enough education and health care
facilities. Many residents gain access to these facilities to learn about public health and get
quality healthcare provisions (Brock et al., 2020). These social determinants play a significant
role in determining the quality of public health of Jordan City.
Conclusion
To sum up, a community health assessment is a crucial aspect in enhancing the public
health safety of a particular region. Nurses often use the windshield survey program to establish
the environmental and social characteristics of given communities. Consequently, they can
understand the public health needs of the communities. The analysis provides a brief assessment
of Jordan city regarding the health of the area. Several social determinants play an integral part
in affecting the health of individuals in the region: Concentrated population, ethnicity, and
maneuvering technology. Therefore, environmental analysis is significant to establish the
essential measures to put at stake for the town's public health safety. Ultimately, it is necessary to
create public awareness on public health safety and further develop strategic measures to evade
the compromisers of community health within the City in Minnesota.
