They also include empyema which is a condition in which pus collects in the space between the lung and the chest wall. Mrs. Smith also has a history of heart disease and diabetes and has been struggling to maintain her blood sugar levels during her hospital stay. The nursing staff has been administering insulin as prescribed, but Mrs. Smith’s blood sugar levels have remained elevated.
One evening, while making rounds, the charge nurse noticed that Mrs. Smith seemed confused and disoriented. Upon further assessment, it was discovered that Mrs. Smith’s blood sugar level was 550 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL). It was higher than the target range of 80-180 mg/dL (American Diabetes Association, 2017).
