Part 2: Essays (30 points each)

For each prompt, write an essay of 1-2 substantial paragraphs (at least 4 complete sentences). Each essay is worth 30 points. If you make a serious effort to respond to an essay prompt, you will receive at least 15 points for your essay, so write even if you don’t know how to answer a question.

Essay 1: Explain how Gregorian chant and the architecture and decoration of Gothic cathedrals are related.

Essay 2: Explain how nationalism operated in European culture during the 19th century. Your essay should describe ethnic nationalism broadly, then discuss – in detail – how two 19th-century composers incorporated nationalism into their music.

Essay 3: How has postmodernism affected Western art music? Your essay should include a general description of how musicians have responded to the challenges of postmodernism, as well as an in-depth discussion of a postmodern composer and at least one of their compositions.
