Using Sampling in Everyday Practice
Although much of what you are going to learn this week is very technical and related to serious research studies, a health information management professional would need to choose samples in different ways.
Example #1:? You supervise the medical coders and they have standard quality and productivity quotas that they must meet.? Each month, you need to audit their work.? If each of your coders averages 500 charts per month, you will want to choose a random sample of their work to audit for quality.? You could use a sample size calculator to determine a statistically valid sample size, but it is more likely that you will just choose your sample size on what seems to make sense (and frankly, how much time you have!).? So lets say you decide to audit 10 charts per coder.? You would calculate their error rate from that sample, and record the results.? If a specific coder seems to have a lot of errors in the 10 chart sample you chose, you may want to audit a few more to see if the error rate continues and this may be a red flag for you about this coders coding quality.
Example #2:? You are one year in with your new electronic health record (EHR) and you want to determine attitudes, issues, and satisfaction of the EHR users in your hospital.? You create a survey and now you have to determine the sample size that you want for survey completion.? Since there are approximately 300 employees at the hospital who use the EHR, you decide that you want to try to survey the entire population, rather than using a random sample.? This is ok; sometimes with a small population you will want to use the entire group.??
