Along this slow processes of degeneration, researchers were able to intervene and restore function by introducing an experimental drug to the cells that suppresses cellular heath and promotes increased cell function. This experimental drug is known as OrganEx, a variant of BrainEx that was successfully able to restore some brain cell function in pigs when tested previously (Yale University, 2022).
This type of research has several implications that will advance medicine beyond its current resuscitation abilities. First and foremost as indicated in the article, this experimental drug has the ability to maintain organs for transplant much longer than traditional methods of artificially introducing oxygenated blood and keeping the organ on ice. When used in conjunction with that current option, organs could be able to be transported in much more adverse conditions as well as over longer distances and timelines.
